A Russian Mi-8 military helicopter breached Polish airspace on 23 September near the northern border town of Braniewo, arriving from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. Polish military radar systems detected the aircraft as it flew approximately 300 meters into Polish sovereign territory at an altitude of 300 meters. The helicopter remained inside Polish airspace for 42 seconds before turning back toward Kaliningrad. In response to the detection, the Polish armed forces scrambled fighter jets and placed ground-based air defense units on heightened alert to monitor the border zone.
Assessment of NATO readiness
The Polish military evaluated the 42-second flight as a calculated maneuver intended to gauge allied responsiveness along the eastern flank.
The nature of the incident indicates that Russia is once again testing the readiness of our air defense.
The Operational Command stated that air defense units maintain continuous 24-hour surveillance to secure sovereign airspace and preserve rapid response capabilities. Allied and Polish air patrols intercept Russian military aircraft over the Baltic Sea multiple times each month when foreign flights approach Polish or Baltic territory. Reuters contacted the Russian Embassy in Warsaw for comment regarding the flight path of the Mi-8, but the diplomatic mission did not immediately respond.

The helicopter crossing north of Braniewo occurred shortly after another aerial incident near a strategic military installation in northern Poland. On 15 September, surveillance systems detected an unidentified unmanned aerial vehicle roughly 500 meters from the US Aegis Ashore missile defense site in Redzikowo. The drone operated in the area for approximately five minutes before moving away from the installation. Military personnel stationed at the site responded by placing a call to the civilian 112 emergency phone line, and defense officials did not disclose whether an interception was attempted. That incident followed previous incursions in September of last year, when Polish forces shot down four out of 19 Russian drones that crossed into sovereign territory.
Regional warnings over hybrid operations
Senior officials in Poland and neighboring NATO states have warned that Moscow is preparing asymmetric actions against European nations supporting Ukraine. In a parliamentary address delivered in mid-September, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk outlined intelligence findings concerning potential cross-border threats.
The Russian plan, according to intelligence assessments, includes hybrid attacks with drones and missiles against countries supporting Ukraine, including Poland.
In late August, Tusk cautioned that Russian escalation was advancing, noting that the subsequent six months would be decisive and that provocations against NATO members could not be ruled out. The head of the Czech security service similarly cautioned that Moscow could stage limited border incursions, false-flag actions, or influence campaigns within months rather than years. Moscow has stated that Western supplies of weaponry, intelligence, and military advisers make allied nations legitimate targets, while Western intelligence agencies describe ongoing sabotage efforts designed to test NATO boundaries without prompting a coordinated alliance response.
