Russian missiles and drones detonate across Moldova during barrage on Ukraine
Moldovan authorities recorded six unauthorized aerial incursions on Saturday morning, with five Russian projectiles exploding in rural districts near the Ukrainian border.
Morning incursions across south-eastern districts
Moldovan defense authorities confirmed that six unauthorized aerial targets breached national airspace on Saturday morning, 3 October 2026, during a Russian military barrage against Ukraine. The Air Operations Service of the Moldovan National Army detected the first wave of objects entering Moldovan territory between 07:45 and 08:00 local time. Surveillance data indicated that five separate weapons detonated on the ground in rural sectors across four south-eastern and central districts. Moldovan police units cordoned off the impact zones in Căușeni, Ștefan Vodă, Hîncești, and Anenii Noi to inspect the craters and recover debris. Official statements confirmed that no civilian casualties occurred across any of the impact locations.
- Explosion outside Căușeni with drone debris located by police at 08:15
- Detonation outside Crocmaz ignites vineyard vegetation and damages nearby windows
- Explosion recorded outside Puhăceni in the Anenii Noi district
- Detonation outside Dubovca in the Hîncești district
- Sixth projectile enters near Palanca and exits toward Biliaivka at 08:05
- Explosion outside Constantinovca with wreckage secured at 09:15
Munition identification and localized damage
The defense ministry identified the five detonated weapons as two unmanned aerial vehicles and three Banderol jet loitering munitions. The earliest ground impact occurred at 07:50 outside the town of Căușeni, where police officers located smoking wreckage at 08:15. A second explosion in the same district took place outside Constantinovca at 08:24, with search teams locating the debris field at 09:15. In the Ștefan Vodă district, a detonation at 07:53 outside the village of Crocmaz ignited dry vegetation in a local vineyard and blew out windows in a nearby residential building. Further impacts occurred outside Puhăceni in Anenii Noi at 08:00 and near Dubovca in Hîncești at 08:03, while a sixth projectile briefly traversed Moldovan airspace near Palanca between 08:04 and 08:05 without detonating.
Government reaction and border security record
Moldovan President Maia Sandu condemned the missile and drone strikes, characterizing the explosions as a direct spillover of the conflict on Moldova's eastern border.
Russian air attack weapons, including Banderol missiles and drones, violated our airspace and exploded on our soil.
The strikes follow repeated airspace breaches registered by Chișinău throughout the year. During an official visit to Finland on Friday, Sandu stated that Russian drones had entered Moldovan airspace more than 45 times in 2026, including eight recorded breaches during the preceding week. The incident in south-eastern Moldova comes four days after another drone carrying Geran-4 designations and a turbojet engine exploded in the northern Orhei district on 30 September. Moldovan authorities stated that coordination with international partners and competent monitoring agencies remains ongoing.
Overnight barrage against southern Ukraine
The incursions coincided with an overnight Russian aerial operation targeting southern and central Ukraine with 157 unmanned aerial vehicles. The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian units launched Shahed strike drones, Gerbera craft, and Parodiya decoys from launch sites in Bryansk, Primorsko-Akhtarsk, occupied Donetsk, and Gvardeyskoye in Crimea. Ukrainian air defenses neutralized 131 of the 157 drones through interception and electronic suppression by 09:00 on Saturday morning. In the adjacent Odesa region of Ukraine, Russian strikes hit a commercial cargo vessel, killing one crew member and wounding three others, though no local air raid sirens sounded in Odesa port during the timeframe of the Moldovan border crossings.
