Trump says Russia will supply diesel to US and global markets after Putin call
Donald Trump said Russia agreed to deliver more than 300,000 tons of diesel immediately, with 500,000 tons more in November and 1 million tons after that. He announced the arrangement in a Truth Social post on Friday, 9 October, tying it to lower fuel prices.
A call announced on Truth Social
Donald Trump said on Friday, 9 October, that he had concluded a "highly successful" discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin about diesel. In a post on Truth Social, he wrote that the two leaders agreed Russia would immediately deliver more than 300,000 tons of diesel fuel to the American and world market. Bloomberg reported that the administration is looking to tame price increases for the critical fuel, and Trump described the arrangement as releasing diesel into the global market. The announcement was made the same evening, in a post that quickly drew coverage from several international outlets.
Volumes and timing
The post set out a sequence of deliveries rather than a single shipment. Russia would immediately supply the 300,000 tons, then deliver 500,000 tons in November, followed by 1 million tons right after that. LBC also reports Trump saying that Russia would then deliver three million tons within a short period, based on the condition of its diesel refineries. The figures in the post are the clearest commitments in the announcement, while the three million ton volume comes only from LBC's account of his remarks.
- Immediately
- 300000 tons
- November
- 500000 tons
- Right after November batch
- 1000000 tons
Strait of Hormuz and prices
Trump linked the supply deal to his position in the Middle East, writing about the Strait of Hormuz in the same message. He argued that the combination would push prices down quickly.
Between our TOTAL CONTROL of the Strait of Hormuz, and this great announcement on Russian Energy, Diesel Prices for Americans and, indeed, the World, will be COMING DOWN, IN RECORD NUMBERS, AND FAST!
Businesses cited by LBC say diesel costs have made transportation more expensive for them and across their supply chains. They have also faced higher oil and gas prices and disruption to international shipping. In the same post, Trump wrote that Iran will not have a nuclear weapon, linking that message to the energy announcement.
Pressure ahead of the midterms
LBC reports that Trump has been under mounting domestic pressure to bring down fuel prices before the November midterm elections, which will decide control of Congress. The fuel announcement therefore arrives as cost concerns grow among transport operators and households. Trump framed lower prices as a central goal of his administration.
Lower prices for Americans, especially our Great Farmers, Ranchers, and Truckers, is my Greatest Priority.
The agreement has so far been announced by Trump on his own platform, and the post contains no delivery schedule beyond the volumes and months it states. Russia's side of the arrangement is described only through Trump's account in the sources, so the timing of actual shipments remains to be seen.
