Russian drone strikes Kyiv school as 160 students and staff shelter underground
A Russian drone struck a four-storey school in western Kyiv on Thursday morning, triggering a fire while more than 160 students and staff took refuge in an underground shelter without reported injuries.
Drone strike on western Kyiv school
A Russian drone struck a four-storey school building in the western district of Kyiv on the morning of 1 October 2026. The direct hit triggered an active fire inside the building, prompting emergency rescue crews and firefighters to deploy to the scene to extinguish the flames. At the time of the morning strike, more than 100 students and 60 school employees were present inside the facility. When the municipal air raid alarm sounded, staff members evacuated all students into an underground shelter located directly beneath the school before the drone made impact. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the strike and resulting fire, reporting that the children remained safe in the bunker and initial evaluations showed no casualties.
Response from Ukrainian authorities
Ukrainian Minister of Education and Science Andriy Butenko praised the teachers and school leadership for their rapid response, confirming on social media that nobody sustained injuries during the attack. Kyiv municipal authorities released video footage documenting the drone colliding directly with the four-storey school structure, citing the incident as an example of attacks on non-military civilian infrastructure. Shortly after the strike on the school, emergency air sirens sounded again throughout the capital, prompting residents to seek shelter as local media reported additional detonations. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian drones struck multiple other parts of Kyiv throughout Thursday morning as air operations against the city intensified.
This is cynical terror. Educational institutions have become one of Russia's regular targets. Recently, almost every day a kindergarten, school, vocational school, university or scientific institution has come under fire.
Large-scale overnight aerial barrage
The morning strike on the school in western Kyiv occurred in the wake of an extensive nationwide aerial barrage carried out overnight between 30 September and 1 October. Russian military forces deployed 188 unmanned aerial vehicles during the attack, an arsenal that included 86 high-speed jet-powered drones. In conjunction with the drone wave, Russian forces fired hypersonic Zircon and Onyx missiles, as well as ballistic Iskander-M and S-400 missiles at targets across Ukraine. Ukrainian air defense systems engaged the incoming barrage, shooting down 155 of the 188 launched drones. Defense units also intercepted five Russian missiles during the multi-vector overnight engagement.
Pattern of strikes on educational sites
The incident in Kyiv represents the latest in a series of Russian strikes directed against Ukrainian research institutions, universities, and schools over the course of September 2026. According to documentation compiled by news agency Interfax-Ukraine, at least four separate educational facilities were attacked in the weeks leading up to the 1 October strike. On 28 September, a Russian drone struck the central Kyiv headquarters of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, killing two individuals and wounding several people, including former National Security and Defense Council secretary Volodymyr Horbulin. On 25 September, an aerial drone struck a lyceum in the town of Ivankiv in Kyiv Oblast. On 21 September, artillery and missile strikes damaged facilities at both Zaporizhzhia National University and Sumy National University, following an earlier 2 September strike by jet-powered drones against the National University of Food Technologies in central Kyiv.
