Russian double-tap drone strike kills 16 at Kryvyi Rih shopping centre
A Russian double-tap drone strike on the Soniachna Galeria shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih killed 16 people and injured 130 as rescuers searched the rubble on Saturday morning.
Strike on Soniachna Galeria
Russian forces attacked the Soniachna Galeria shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih on Friday evening using strike drones. The assault unfolded in two successive waves separated by approximately 30 minutes. The initial drone strike struck the commercial building directly, causing structural damage and igniting a substantial fire while shoppers and employees were inside. As municipal emergency teams, medical crews, and firefighters arrived at the site to extinguish the blaze and pull survivors from the debris, a second drone hit the exact same location. Ukrainian officials described the sequence as a deliberate double-tap tactic intended to inflict casualties on first responders. Emergency personnel continued clearing debris through Friday night and Saturday morning to reach trapped survivors.
Casualty count and rescue efforts
The casualty count rose steadily following the strike. Early reports on Friday indicated five fatalities and 52 injured before Dnipropetrovsk regional military governor Oleksandr Hanzha reported 14 dead and 121 wounded, including 22 children. By Saturday morning, Kryvyi Rih Defense Council head Oleksandr Vilkul updated the total to 16 dead and 130 injured, with 25 children among the wounded. A total of 61 people remained hospitalized on Saturday, including 14 children, with 32 patients listed in severe or critical condition. Those in critical care included three children: two boys aged 10 and 16 and an 11-year-old girl. Rescue crews continued searching for nine missing individuals, among them two children, while city authorities designated Sunday as an official day of mourning.

Additional strikes in southern Ukraine
Russian aerial attacks on Friday also hit civilian infrastructure in the southern Mykolaiv region. An air strike struck the settlement of Tokarivka, setting fire to a retail store, a pharmacy, and a local post office branch. Ukrainian Minister of Internal Affairs Ivan Vyhivskyi reported that four people died in the Mykolaiv region attack, including three children aged 11 and 12 alongside one adult. Another report from Ukrainian emergency services on the Tokarivka strike recorded four dead, including one child, and one person injured. First responders worked at the impact zone into the night to extinguish the facility fires and verify the casualty toll.
Ukrainian response and broader aerial exchanges
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a native of Kryvyi Rih, addressed the attack in a video broadcast on Friday evening and pledged that Ukraine would retaliate.
This is absolute Russian brutality. Just animals. We will certainly respond.
The strike on Kryvyi Rih took place one day after a Russian ballistic missile attack on Kyiv that killed between 16 and 17 people on Thursday. The attacks occurred alongside an escalation in cross-border drone operations. Ukrainian forces had expanded drone strikes against Russian fuel depots and logistics hubs to disrupt Moscow's military supply lines. On Sunday, 16 August, Russian defense officials reported shooting down over 800 Ukrainian drones across multiple regions during a large-scale aerial exchange. Zelensky called on international partners to supply additional defense capabilities to protect Ukrainian cities.
It is important that we have everything needed to protect life. It is important that the world does not remain silent in the face of all this. This Russian war must be ended, and we need the world's help to make that happen.
