Russian forces launched an overnight wave of 107 drones across Ukraine on 1 October 2026, with Ukrainian air defense units destroying or jamming 87 of the incoming aircraft by 08:00. In the Mykolaiv region, a morning Shahed drone attack on the municipality of Vesniane killed a 50-year-old man. Separate overnight strikes injured one person in Kyiv and another in Odesa. Russian defense officials stated that their forces targeted a logistics center in Kyiv, a data center in Odesa, and a cargo vessel in the port of Chornomorsk, claiming each location served military purposes. Serhiy Lysak, head of the Odesa regional military administration, reported damage to local infrastructure.

On the ground, Ukrainian forces recorded tactical gains against Russian positions around Lyman, where Russian ground advances remained stalled. In Washington, Ukrainian charge d'affaires Denys Sienik submitted Russian firms supplying components for Moscow's planned Rassvet satellite internet network to the Trump administration and Congress for potential sanctions. Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called for a diplomatic solution and a partial ceasefire to restore agricultural shipments through the Black Sea corridor.
The world urgently needs these exports. If they continue to be prevented by Russia, then hunger, destabilisation and the resulting refugee movements threaten, including to Europe.
In the Russian-occupied Kherson region, utility and food costs increased following Russian State Duma elections. Serhii Danylov of the Association of Middle East Studies reported that electricity tariffs rose by one third, waste collection fees increased by almost 40%, and bread prices doubled.
