Real Madrid defender Antonio Rüdiger retires from Germany duty after 86 caps

Departure after twelve years

Real Madrid centre-back Antonio Rüdiger announced his retirement from international football on Tuesday, 1 September 2026. The 33-year-old defender confirmed his decision on Instagram roughly two months after Germany concluded their 2026 World Cup campaign. Rüdiger explained that he intends to dedicate his remaining playing career entirely to his club duties in Spain, having extended his contract with Real Madrid in June until 2027. He entered the starting lineup for Real Madrid under manager José Mourinho in a 4-0 victory over the weekend prior to making his announcement. In his public statement, the Berlin-born defender explained that the time had come to step aside for emerging German players.

After some time reflecting, the moment has come for me to end my national team career and clear the way for the young generation.

International career and silverware

Rüdiger earned 86 caps and scored three goals for Germany across an international career spanning more than a decade. He made his senior debut under manager Joachim Löw on 13 May 2014 in a 0-0 friendly against Poland. Although his debut occurred shortly before Germany's 2014 World Cup triumph in Brazil, he was not included in that tournament squad. Two years later, a cruciate ligament tear sustained during a pre-tournament training camp prevented him from participating in the 2016 European Championship. His sole senior international trophy came at the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia, where Germany won the tournament.

Tournament campaigns and the 2026 World Cup

Rüdiger represented Germany at three World Cups in 2018, 2022, and 2026, as well as two European Championships in 2020 and 2024. His time in the national defence coincided with difficult tournament campaigns, including group-stage exits at the 2018 tournament in Russia, where he played only in a 2-1 win against Sweden, and the 2022 tournament in Qatar. In autumn 2025, an injury caused Rüdiger to lose his starting place under coach Julian Nagelsmann to Jonathan Tah and Nico Schlotterbeck. He regained a starting spot at the 2026 World Cup after Schlotterbeck sustained an ankle injury against Ivory Coast. Rüdiger featured in all four matches in North America, playing 110 minutes in his final appearance, a round-of-32 penalty shootout loss to Paraguay.

Even though the big title eluded us in recent tournaments and we had to endure some painful defeats, this time was an incredibly special chapter for me, one that will shape me forever.

Germany's new cycle under Klopp

Rüdiger is the second veteran player to step down from the national team following the 2026 World Cup, joining 40-year-old goalkeeper Manuel Neuer who also retired after the defeat against Paraguay. In his farewell message, Rüdiger offered specific gratitude to former national managers Joachim Löw, Hansi Flick, and Julian Nagelsmann, along with his former youth team coach Horst Hrubesch. Germany is now set to begin a new competitive cycle under newly appointed manager Jürgen Klopp. The German team opens their UEFA Nations League group schedule on 24 September 2026 against the Netherlands, followed by fixtures against Greece in Augsburg, Serbia in Munich, and an away match in Greece.
