Mark Cain appeared at Norwich Magistrates' Court on Wednesday following the death of Dr Hannah Terry, a 45-year-old GP who treated members of the royal family at Sandringham.
Discovery and court appearance
Mark Cain, 45, appeared at Norwich Magistrates' Court on Wednesday, 7 October 2026, facing charges for the murder of his wife, Dr Hannah Terry. Police discovered the 45-year-old general practitioner dead inside a bedroom at their residence on Fern Hill in Dersingham during the early hours of Sunday, 4 October 2026. Paramedics summoned Norfolk Police to the property at approximately 02:20 after arriving on the scene and determining that the doctor was dead. Cain was taken into police custody later that Sunday and formally charged with murder following a preliminary investigation at the scene. During his initial hearing in Norwich, the defendant did not address the charges against him, and magistrates remanded him in custody.
Circumstances and post-mortem findings
Prosecutor Jackie Hanlon presented initial findings from a Home Office post-mortem examination during the court appearance. Pathologists conducted the autopsy on Monday, 5 October 2026, detecting blunt force trauma injuries to the right side of Dr Terry's head. The medical examination also identified physical injuries consistent with compression of the neck, indicating the victim had been bludgeoned and strangled. Norfolk Police stated that the formal cause of death remains under examination while detectives seek further details surrounding the events. Children were present in the household when the incident occurred, as Dr Terry, a mother of two sons and one daughter, had organized an overnight sleepover at the home. Friends told reporters that Dr Terry had appeared unusually stressed and distracted in the days leading up to Sunday morning.
