Shamrock Rovers beat Ararat 2-1 but fall short of Champions League comeback

First-half dominance

Shamrock Rovers needed to overturn a first-leg deficit and started with intent, taking the lead in the 12th minute when Matt Healy swept a left-footed shot home from the edge of the area after a flowing move involving Graham Burke, Jack Byrne and Aaron Greene. A prolonged six-minute VAR check tested the patience of the home crowd before the goal was confirmed, but it gave the Hoops the foothold they craved. Rovers continued to press, and they doubled their advantage before the break after Ararat goalkeeper João Bravim hesitated on a short back-pass; Greene pounced, exchanged passes with Byrne, and rolled the ball into the net. Dylan Watts and Greene both had chances to add a third, while Jake Mulraney saw a free-kick saved, leaving the score 2-0 at half-time.

Ararat response and the decisive strike

The Armenian side had been restricted to rare counter-attacks for most of the evening, with Max Carlier firing wildly over from distance and captain Karen Muradyan dragging a low drive narrowly wide early in the second half. Rovers continued to create openings, they registered 17 attempts on goal to Ararat's five, but a lapse in concentration in the 73rd minute proved costly. Brazilian striker Sandro Lima, who had earlier hit the post in the seventh minute after a Rovers corner was turned over, found space and finished to make it 2-1 on the night. The goal was Ararat's only shot on target and it swung the tie decisively in favour of the visitors.

Missed opportunities

Rovers had the chances to kill the contest before Lima's intervention. In the 33rd minute, a well-worked move down the right saw Mulraney cross for Adam Brennan, whose headed effort from close range bounced over the bar. That miss denied Rovers a potential leveller on aggregate, and while the home side controlled possession for long spells, they could not find the third goal that would have forced extra time. Pico Lopes, a World Cup veteran, had earlier done enough to put Lima off when the forward stretched for a far-post chance in the opening minutes, but the reprieve did not translate into a safe passage.

What comes next

Shamrock Rovers' Champions League campaign ends at the second qualifying round, but they will drop into the Europa League third qualifying round where they face Albanian side KF Egnatia next week. The first leg will be played in Tallaght. Manager Stephen Bradley will hope new signing Will Fitzgerald, recruited from Sligo Rovers for a reported fee of €75,000 earlier in the day, can add depth to a squad that showed plenty of attacking intent but was left to rue a single defensive lapse. The match officials, led by English referee Sam Barrott, who is due to take charge of the Community Shield between Arsenal and Manchester City, completed a night where fine margins decided the outcome.
