Three family members and dog found dead in Rome home in suspected murder-suicide

Discovery in northeast Rome

Emergency services and firefighters in Rome entered a private residence on via dell'Antracite in the Pietralata district on 31 August 2026 after relatives raised the alarm. Family members had contacted authorities after repeated unsuccessful attempts to reach the household by phone. Firefighters assisted investigators in accessing the property, where responders located the bodies of Luca Ambasciano, 42, his wife Valentina Pambianco, 41, and their five-year-old daughter Bianca on the double bed in the main bedroom. The family dog, a pet named Theo, was also found dead inside the same room. While initial reports released immediately after the discovery listed the parents as 32 and 31 years of age, subsequent verification confirmed that the father was 42 and the mother was 41.

Investigation and forensic evidence

Carabinieri from the Montesacro company opened an investigation alongside the Rome prosecutor's office and forensic medical examiners to establish the exact sequence of events. All three family members sustained fatal gunshot wounds, and officers found a Glock handgun lying in the bedroom beside the victims. Luca Ambasciano, who worked remotely as an IT technician, held a valid firearms license, and records indicated the firearm had been legally purchased several weeks earlier. Investigators are treating the case as a suspected double murder and suicide. Inside the residence, officers discovered multiple handwritten letters, each addressed to a specific relative with their name inscribed on the paper, detailing individual requests and tasks to be carried out after their deaths.

Household background and daily care

Valentina Pambianco was born and raised in the neighborhood near via dei Durantini, while Luca Ambasciano had moved to the district nine years earlier. The couple married before the pandemic, and in 2020 their daughter Bianca was born prematurely after a seven-month pregnancy with severe health conditions. While Luca worked from home, Valentina dedicated herself full-time to caring for Bianca, who attended regular rehabilitation and medical appointments. Daily support had long been provided by Valentina's parents, including her father Sandro, a retired railway worker who helped walk the dog and assisted with errands, and her mother Lucia, who had recently developed health issues. That support system paused when the grandparents left Rome for a holiday, leaving the couple alone in the city.

Municipal support and official response

Local authorities confirmed that social services had maintained active contact with the family due to the child's complex care requirements. Massimiliano Umberti, the president of the IV Municipality of Rome, addressed the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The family found lifeless in the apartment in Pietralata was followed by our social services, the daughter was severely disabled. Good people, who had been struggling for years. The mother had never resigned herself. This is not a situation of marginality and although we, as an administration, had them in our care, although they were also supported economically, it was not enough.

In one of the messages left in the home, the couple wrote that they could not manage alone, while also referencing difficulties in their personal relationship. Carabinieri and forensic personnel continue their work to determine which parent fired the shots before taking their own life.
