Origins of the political dispute

Tensions between former Romanian president Traian Băsescu and Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) leader Kelemen Hunor surfaced during political negotiations over a new cabinet. On 13 September 2026, Băsescu stated on România TV that the ethnic Hungarian party should be excluded from domestic decision-making in Bucharest. He accused UDMR of having coordinated excessively with authorities in Budapest and mocked suggestions that Hunor could be appointed prime minister, an option discussed in Bucharest in connection with talks involving Nicușor Dan. Speaking on the Digi24 program "În fața ta" on 19 September 2026, Băsescu addressed the moniker and his background under the previous communist regime. He stated that he could handle current political difficulties, comparing the situation to resolving problems left behind by the government of former prime minister Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu. Băsescu acknowledged that he developed his career under communist rule while pointing to his subsequent institutional decisions in office, specifically the official declassification of secret police archives and the condemnation of communism.

Băsescu detailed his career path across Romania, explaining that he lived and studied in Bucharest, Constanța, and Bacău rather than abroad in London. He also cited his commercial maritime background, recalling that he commanded the largest vessel in Romania, a 306-meter ship with a transport capacity of one million barrels.

Allegations of foreign influence

Băsescu directed sharp criticism at Hunor regarding the UDMR leader's relationship with former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán. He stated that Hunor had aligned closely with Budapest prior to political changes in Hungary, where Orbán lost power in elections. Băsescu asserted that Hunor is now attempting to reposition himself within Romanian politics by seeking local political masters.

The verbal exchange occurred as political parties conducted negotiations to assemble a parliamentary majority in Bucharest. Băsescu maintained that UDMR should not hold executive posts in the cabinet, while UDMR representatives continued their involvement in government discussions.
