Romanian students win one gold, five silver, and three bronze medals at the 2026 International Math and Chemistry Olympiads

Romanian students secured a total of ten medals across two major international science competitions held in July 2026, the Ministry of Education and Research announced via Facebook. The results span the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) in Shanghai, China, and the 58th International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Mathematics Olympiad in Shanghai

The Romanian mathematics team earned one gold, three silver, and two bronze medals at the IMO, which took place from 10 to 21 July with 666 contestants from over 120 countries. David-Vlad Mărghidan of Liceul Internațional de Informatică București won the gold. Silver medals went to Mihai Alexandru Ardelean (Colegiul Național Onisifor Ghibu Oradea), Radu Ionuț-Stoleriu (Colegiul Național Emil Racoviță Iași), and David Ghibu (Liceul Internațional de Informatică București). Bronze medals were awarded to Emanuel Mazăre (Colegiul Național Alexandru Odobescu Pitești) and Andrei Vila (Liceul Internațional de Informatică București). The team was led by conf. univ. dr. Cătălin Gherghe (University of Bucharest), with lector Mihai Chiș (Timișoara) as deputy and Lucian Țurea from the Romanian Society of Mathematical Sciences.

Chemistry Olympiad in Tashkent

At the IChO, held from 10 to 19 July in Tashkent, the Romanian team collected one gold, two silver, and one bronze medal. Matei Gabriel Ursachescu of Colegiul Național B.P. Hasdeu Buzău claimed the gold. Silver medals were won by Mihnea Gabriel Alexe (Colegiul Național de Informatică Tudor Vianu București) and Mihai Stanciu (Colegiul Național Moise Nicoară Arad), while Tudor Ștefan Anghel (Colegiul Național B.P. Hasdeu Buzău) took bronze. The students trained under the guidance of faculty from the University of Bucharest's Faculty of Chemistry. The team was coordinated by prof. dr. Daniela Bogdan (Colegiul Național Sf. Sava București) and conf. univ. dr. Mihaela Matache (Faculty of Chemistry, University of Bucharest).

Ministry support and coordination

The Ministry of Education and Research stated that it supports national teams at international olympiads by covering participation fees, travel costs, and daily allowances, as well as organising the preceding local, county, and national selection stages. Coordination of the olympiads was handled by the Directorate for Olympiads, Competitions, Partnerships and Extracurricular Education, with inspector Elisabeta Ana Nagy overseeing the process.

The two competitions overlapped for most of their duration, with the chemistry event concluding on 19 July and the mathematics event ending on 21 July. The ministry published the chemistry results on Sunday, 19 July, and the mathematics results the following day, Monday, 20 July.
