Romanian Civic Groups Call Nationwide Rallies Against Extremism and Violence

Coordinated demonstrations across four cities

Civic organizations in Romania will stage coordinated peaceful demonstrations in four cities on Sunday evening, 20 September 2026. The central gathering will assemble in Bucharest's Piața Victoriei under the official slogan "Stop extremism and violence! Democratic Romania". Parallel rallies will take place in Iași at Piața Independenței starting between 18:00 and 18:30, in Oradea at Piața Unirii at 18:30, and in Timișoara at Piața Victoriei beginning at 19:00. Organizers have urged all attendees to wear white shirts as a visible symbol of peace and to conduct themselves in a civilized and dignified manner. The collective stated that the public mobilizations aim to deliver a clear message that Romanian streets do not belong to violent extremists.

Civic groups mobilize against public hostility

The Sunday mobilizations are organized by civic advocacy groups including Corupția ucide, Lupii Tricolori, and Rezistența. The groups organized the events after observing growing public aggression, xenophobia, fake news, and conspiracy theories shifting from online forums into street confrontations. In their joint event announcement, the organizers stressed that authentic grievances from livestock breeders and farmers had been hijacked earlier in the week by radical factions seeking confrontation. They maintained that legitimate dissent against government policy must remain distinct from violent attacks on fellow citizens.

The civic group Corupția ucide issued a statement detailing why citizens are gathering in public squares.

We are taking to the streets because hatred, threats, and public instigations, tolerated for too long online, have reached the streets, and the state only reacts after people are assaulted. Rebellion against governance is not extremism. Assaulting fellow citizens, threatening people who have no connection to government decisions, and using violence as a political weapon is no longer protest. Romania is and will remain a democratic European state regardless of how hard some try to change its direction.

Security perimeter and timetable in Bucharest

In Bucharest, the authorized gathering in the central island of Piața Victoriei is scheduled to take place between 17:30 and 22:00. Participant arrival will occur between 17:30 and 18:00, followed by public speeches from 18:00 to 21:30, before participants disperse between 21:30 and 22:00. Law enforcement will operate security checkpoints along all access routes to Piața Victoriei, where officers will verify identification and inspect bulky bags or luggage. Gendarmerie dialogue teams wearing marked blue vests will assist attendees and receive incident reports, while a dedicated security perimeter will protect accredited journalists. The Bucharest Traffic Brigade will implement traffic management measures and may restrict or divert vehicle circulation around the square depending on participant turnout. Law enforcement also reiterated that carrying weapons, incendiary items, tear gas, or stun devices is prohibited, noting that unauthorized counter-protests risk administrative fines between 500 and 5,000 lei.

Fallout from Tuesday agricultural protests

The nationwide civic response follows violent clashes during a demonstration by several thousand farmers and sheep breeders in Piața Victoriei on Tuesday. That demonstration escalated when aggressive groups breached security barriers and threw stones and other projectiles at law enforcement units, prompting officers to deploy tear gas and water cannons. Following the Tuesday clashes, prosecutors and police detained 10 suspects on charges including assault against public officials, property destruction, disturbance of public peace, and public incitement. Gendarmes escorted 47 individuals to police stations, opened three criminal files, and levied 24 fines amounting to a combined 46,000 lei.
