A humanoid robot named Lightning, developed by Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor, completed a 100-meter sprint in 9.32 seconds during preliminary testing in Beijing on 22 August 2026. The clocked time is 0.26 seconds faster than the human world record of 9.58 seconds established by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt at the 2009 World Athletics Championships in Berlin. Chinese state television broadcast footage of the sprint, which Reuters and international media outlets subsequently reported. During the trial run, Lightning registered a maximum peak velocity of 14.5 meters per second, which converts to approximately 52.2 kilometers per hour. The sprint was conducted as an initial test event for the second edition of the World Humanoid Robot Games, an international competition that opened on Saturday in the Chinese capital. Although Usain Bolt remains the fastest human runner in athletic history, the Beijing test marks the first time an autonomous humanoid platform has surpassed his mark in the 100-meter discipline.

Mechanical redesign and marathon history
The sprint result follows engineering adjustments designed to increase the stride length and pace of the bipedal system. According to China Central Television, Lightning previously stood at a total height of 169 centimeters and operated with legs measuring 95 centimeters. Ahead of the World Humanoid Robot Games, researchers lengthened the robot's legs by 10 centimeters, bringing total leg length to 1.05 meters. The mechanical modifications were implemented following earlier competitive outings where the machine demonstrated endurance performance. In April 2026, Lightning won the Beijing half marathon by finishing the 21-kilometer course in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. That performance was also faster than the established human men's world record for the half-marathon distance, establishing the robot as a dual competitor across both long-distance and short-track sprint formats.
Unitree and the Superman prototype
Lightning's sprint in Beijing represents the second time within a single week that a Chinese robotics developer reported surpassing athletic benchmarks set by Usain Bolt. Days earlier, Unitree, a robotics company based in Hangzhou, introduced its own humanoid prototype designated as Superman. Video released by the company showed Superman sprinting on a running track at a speed of 12.66 meters per second, which exceeds 45 kilometers per hour. Unitree reported that this velocity eclipsed the peak instantaneous speed that Bolt reached during his record-setting 100-meter race in Berlin. In addition to linear sprint speed, the manufacturer reported that the Superman platform can execute a two-meter standing vertical jump. However, the performance metrics for Superman were published solely by Unitree without independent third-party verification, and the machine remains an experimental prototype.
