Rio Ave pays €1 million release clause to hire Vasco Seabra from Arouca
Rio Ave agreed to pay a €1 million buyout clause to sign manager Vasco Seabra from Arouca, replacing Sotiris Silaidopoulos following a difficult start to the Primeira Liga season.
Terms of the Vila do Conde agreement
Rio Ave reached an agreement on 30 September 2026 to appoint Vasco Seabra as their new head coach after agreeing to meet the €1 million release clause in his contract with Primeira Liga rivals Arouca. The 43-year-old Portuguese coach emerged as the priority target of Rio Ave majority shareholder Evangelos Marinakis, who presented a substantial contract offer to persuade him to move. Seabra had been content at Arouca and was not seeking an exit during the autumn campaign, but Rio Ave's willingness to trigger the buyout clause removed the decision from Arouca's leadership. The coach led Arouca's morning training session on Wednesday before finalizing terms with the Vila do Conde side. Arouca will receive the full €1 million compensation fee as part of the transaction.
Disappointing start forces Rio Ave coaching change
The management change follows a difficult start to the 2026–2027 domestic season for Rio Ave under Greek manager Sotiris Silaidopoulos. Through seven Primeira Liga matchdays, the club sits in 16th position in the table, placing them inside the relegation play-off spot with only four points gathered. Rio Ave recorded one win, one draw, and five defeats across those opening seven fixtures, scoring five goals while conceding 15. A 1-0 away defeat against Alverca in the seventh matchday accelerated the club administration's decision to seek a new coach.

Silaidopoulos originally arrived in Vila do Conde in the summer of 2025 after working on the coaching staff at Greek side Olympiacos. In his debut 2025–2026 campaign, the Greek tactician led Rio Ave to a 12th-place finish with 36 points in the Portuguese top flight. However, Rio Ave's board expressed dissatisfaction with the team's early-season trajectory and lack of results in the opening two months of his second term.

Seabra leaves Arouca in fifth position
The transfer brings an unexpected end to Seabra's tenure at Arouca, where he had guided the team into fifth place in the Primeira Liga standings. Arouca collected 11 points from their first seven games of the season, registering three wins, two draws, and two defeats. In his final match in charge, Arouca fought back from a two-goal deficit to earn a 2-2 draw away against Sporting CP at the Estadio Jose Alvalade. Seabra originally joined Arouca in October 2024, securing the club's top-flight status in the 2024–2025 season before agreeing to a contract extension through 2027.
Top-flight experience across Portuguese football
Rio Ave becomes the latest chapter in Seabra's managerial career across Portugal's highest division. Before his two-year stint at Arouca, Seabra held head coaching roles in the Primeira Liga with Estoril Praia, Maritimo, Moreirense, and Boavista. The Portuguese manager now takes charge of a Rio Ave squad in need of immediate defensive improvement and stability, with the club seeking to pull away from the bottom three and climb the domestic table.
