Following the arrest, law enforcement escorted the eldest son of late Northern League founder Umberto Bossi to the Busto Arsizio correctional facility. The detention followed an official cumulative sentencing order totaling five years and nine months of imprisonment. Chief Prosecutor Carlo Nocerino of the Busto Arsizio Public Prosecutor's Office signed the judicial execution decree. The cumulative sentence accounts for final judgments stemming from criminal offenses committed between 2011 and 2020 across multiple jurisdictions. Umberto Bossi, who founded the secessionist Northern League before its transition into the nationalist League, died in March 2025 at age 84 following prolonged health complications linked to a 2004 stroke.

Misappropriation of political funds and regional fraud

A central element of the cumulative custodial sentence concerns the misappropriation of political party funds in Milan. Bossi, a former rally driver, unlawfully used approximately 160,000 euros from the Northern League party accounts to cover private living costs. Judicial findings documented that the diverted political funds paid for personal expenditures, including household utility bills, pay-television packages, and other private services. In addition to the Milan misappropriation conviction, the cumulative order signed by prosecutors covers several counts of fraud. These fraudulent acts were committed across northern Italian jurisdictions, including Busto Arsizio, Varese, and Novara.

Illicit welfare benefit claims and eviction history

The cumulative prison term also incorporates convictions for the unlawful receipt of the Italian citizenship income welfare benefit. An investigation conducted by the Guardia di Finanza determined that Bossi fraudulently secured state welfare support between 2020 and 2023. Over that period, he collected 280 euros per month across 43 distinct monthly disbursements, obtaining a combined 12,800 euros in public money. The financial benefit was officially linked to subsidizing rental payments for a residential apartment. However, investigators established that Bossi submitted a falsified single substitute declaration to access the funds, having already received an eviction notice in 2019 for accumulating rental payment arrears.

Excluded domestic mistreatment ruling

Judicial authorities excluded an additional prison sentence of one year and four months from the five-year and nine-month cumulative calculation. That separate ruling stemmed from the domestic mistreatment of his mother at her residence in Azzate during 2016. The Tribunal of Varese issued the original first-instance conviction in June 2025, and the Court of Appeal confirmed the 16-month sentence in June 2026. Case records detailed repeated demands for money accompanied by verbal abuse and physical aggression, including an altercation where Bossi pushed his mother's head against a wall and another where she fled the home. The mother later withdrew her criminal complaint, prompting the dismissal of related charges for threats and injury, but Italian prosecutors proceeded ex officio with the mistreatment offense despite Bossi denying all allegations.
