Laurențiu Reghecampf returns to FCSB after Marius Baciu leaves following 5-0 loss

Becali appoints Reghecampf for third stint

FCSB owner Gigi Becali announced on 20 September 2026 that Laurențiu Reghecampf will return as head coach of the Bucharest club. The 51-year-old manager agreed to leave Esperance Tunis, who held first place in the Tunisian league, to take over the Romanian side. Becali contacted Reghecampf directly by telephone following a 5-0 away defeat against Universitatea Craiova. The owner stated that Reghecampf did not prioritize base wages in the contract discussions, requesting performance-based bonuses instead.

Laurențiu Reghecampf is the new coach of FCSB. It is my decision, which I made after thinking very carefully. I was impressed by how the fans supported the team even after the 0-5 in Craiova. I saw that the supporters applauded the players and wanted to stand by them even after this failure in Craiova. And then I decided to give them a gift and bring them the coach they want. Laurențiu Reghecampf is the new coach of FCSB, so the supporters can rest easy. They are the power of this club and I take their opinion into account very much.

Baciu exits following Craiova defeat

The managerial change ended the tenure of Marius Baciu, who took charge in May. Baciu led FCSB through the domestic play-out to earn a spot in the UEFA Conference League qualifiers, where the Romanian club suffered elimination in the second round against Latvian side FK Auda. Across his 15 games in charge in all competitions, Baciu registered 6 wins, 3 draws, and 6 defeats, with 27 goals scored and 28 conceded. Baciu indicated after the loss in Craiova that stepping down was the proper path after discussing the situation with club executives.

FCSB Board of Administration president Mihai Stoica addressed the coaching change, noting that personal rapport with players was insufficient to maintain competitive standards.

Now, to get results as a coach, I don't know... it is not enough to be loved by the dressing room. Maybe there are some whom the dressing room does not appreciate as individuals, but who have other methods of imposing themselves and produce other results.

Domestic standings and candidate background

The coaching switch follows a difficult start to the domestic campaign. FCSB occupies 10th position in the Romanian Superliga table with 12 points from 10 matches, placing the club nine points behind league leaders Rapid on 21 points and eight points behind second-placed Universitatea Craiova on 20 points.

Prior to Reghecampf's agreement, Romanian football media and figures such as former international Ciprian Marica had discussed other candidates, including Adrian Mutu, Marius Șumudică, and Ianis Zicu. Former CFR Cluj official Bogdan Mara had also publicly expressed interest in collaborating with FCSB on player recruitment, having previously assisted in bringing players Meriton Korenica and Karlo Muhar to the club.

Previous success and next fixtures

Reghecampf enters his third managerial spell at FCSB with an established record of domestic trophies. He previously managed the club between May 2012 and May 2014, and again from December 2015 to May 2017. During those two stints, he won two Romanian league championships in 2013 and 2014, the Romanian Supercup in 2014, and the League Cup in 2016. FCSB will return to Superliga action after the competition break with a home match against Oțelul Galați.
