Real Madrid signs 19-year-old Yan Diomandé from Leipzig for club-record €125 million

Real Madrid announced on Thursday, 6 August, that it had reached an agreement with RB Leipzig for the transfer of 19-year-old Ivorian winger Yan Diomandé, who signs for seven seasons until 30 June 2033. The guaranteed fee is reported at €125 million, with performance-related add-ons of €10-15 million potentially bringing the total package to €130-140 million, depending on the source. The deal surpasses the €103 million fixed fee Real paid Borussia Dortmund for Jude Bellingham in 2023 and makes Diomandé the most expensive African footballer in history, overtaking Nicolas Pépé's €80 million move from Lille to Arsenal in 2019. According to LaVanguardia, Diomandé becomes the sixth most expensive signing in football history, behind Neymar (€222 million), Kylian Mbappé (€180 million), Aleksander Isak (€145 million), Morgan Rogers, and Elliot Anderson. LaVanguardia also notes that only 23 players had previously commanded a nine-figure transfer fee since Gareth Bale's €101 million move from Tottenham in 2013.

Rapid rise from Leganés

Diomandé's ascent has been swift. He joined Spanish club Leganés in 2024 from academies in Ivory Coast and the United States, debuting with the first team in March 2025 and finishing that campaign with two goals and one assist in 10 appearances. Leipzig signed him that summer for approximately €20 million, meaning his value has multiplied roughly sixfold in 12 months. At Leipzig, he registered 12 Bundesliga goals and between 8 and 9 assists (sources vary), earning the Bundesliga's best young player award. Across all competitions, he recorded 13 goals and 10 assists in 36 matches, according to ABC. ABC also noted that the Santiago Bernabéu is only 19 kilometres from Leganés's Butarque stadium, yet Real opted to reinforce other positions last season with signings including Huijsen, Carreras, and Alexander-Arnold rather than pursuing the forward who was practically next door.

World Cup and competing suitors

Diomandé also impressed at the 2026 World Cup with Ivory Coast, who were eliminated by Norway in the round of 32. His performances attracted interest from Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain, with a source telling AFP in late June that PSG had been negotiating with Leipzig before withdrawing over the transfer fee and salary demands. Leipzig, known for extracting high fees for young talent, had insisted the player was not for sale. Diomandé's Leipzig contract ran until 2029 and contained no release clause, giving the German club leverage. Their previous record sales were Joško Gvardiol to Manchester City for €90 million in 2023 and Benjamin Sesko to Manchester United for €76 million last year, both now eclipsed.

Mourinho's revamped squad

Diomandé is the sixth signing of the summer for Real Madrid, following Bernardo Silva, Marc Cucurella, Ibrahima Konaté, Denzel Dumfries, and Carlos Espi. The overhaul comes after what AP described as a disappointing end to last season and is being led by José Mourinho, who returns to the Madrid bench 13 years after his first spell. Diomandé is expected to slot into the right side of attack alongside Kylian Mbappé and Vinicius Junior. It was not yet clear whether he would initially be registered with Madrid's B squad.

Agency dispute

The transfer has also triggered a conflict between two agencies that have represented Diomandé: Maxidel Management, the Ivorian firm that handled him during his formative years, and Roc Nation Sports, the American agency that also represents Vinicius and Endrick. Roc Nation obtained total representation rights in early 2026, but Maxidel Management filed a complaint with FIFA claiming it deserved compensation for its earlier role. A former advisor, Dez Bamba, is also involved in the dispute.
