Real Madrid and Manchester City draw 1-1 in Champions League after disputed whistle
Real Madrid drew 1-1 against Manchester City in the Women's Champions League after referee Silvia Gasperotti blew the whistle before an 88th-minute strike by Silvia Cristóbal.
Caicedo strikes in dominant first half
Real Madrid secured a 1-1 draw against English Women's Super League champions Manchester City at the MCFC Academy stadium on Thursday in the second round of the UEFA Women's Champions League. Head coach Pau Quesada fielded a starting lineup featuring Under-20 World Cup winner Silvia Cristóbal at left-back, alongside central defenders Maëlle Lakrar and Bella Andersson. The Spanish side established early control through central midfielders Elisa Senss and Andreia Jacinto, pressing Manchester City into defensive errors from the opening seconds. Manchester City threatened when Mary Fowler headed against the crossbar from an Alex Greenwood set piece, but the hosts struggled to connect Laura Blindkilde, Yui Hasegawa, and Aoba Fujino with their forward line. Real Madrid capitalized in the 29th minute when Linda Caicedo received a pass from Jacinto and struck a low shot past goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita.
Shaw equalizes following tactical adjustments
Manchester City manager Andrée Jeglertz adjusted team positioning at halftime, raising pressing intensity to disrupt Real Madrid's buildup. The home side found an equalizer in the 51st minute when Khadija Shaw capitalized on a turnover near the Madrid penalty area and finished past the goalkeeper. Shaw and winger Lauren Hemp created repeated difficulties for the Madrid defense throughout the second half, prompting Quesada to introduce Lineth Beerensteyn in place of Felicia Schröder. The result leaves both teams on two points from two draws in the league phase.
Speaking after the match, Shaw reflected on the shift in momentum across both halves.
We tried the second half much better than we started the first half. Disappointed that we didn't win the game but definitely fight to the end and that's good.
- Linda Caicedo scores the opening goal for Real Madrid.
- Khadija Shaw equalizes for Manchester City.
- Referee Silvia Gasperotti stops play before Silvia Cristóbal scores into the top corner.
Late controversy over referee collision
Controversy arrived in the 88th minute when Cristóbal sent a shot into the top corner from inside the penalty area. Italian referee Silvia Gasperotti disallowed the potential winner because she had blown her whistle before the strike, having accidentally collided with Manchester City forward Beth Mead and impeded her ability to contest the ball. Real Madrid players and staff protested the timing of the whistle, arguing that play should have continued to allow video review. Quesada noted after the match that delaying the whistle would have enabled a full review of the sequence.
It is hard for me to understand why she whistled earlier, she could have waited for VAR to intervene. We have been working toward this for a long time, you let the action finish, you go to VAR, and you check it.
Round two Champions League action
The draw in Manchester concluded a round of fixtures that left reigning champions FC Barcelona as the only club with six points from their opening two matches. Elsewhere in the competition, Paris Saint-Germain defeated Belgian side OH Leuven 5-0 at their suburban training center, led by an early ninth-minute opener from Rasheedat Ajibade and a second-half brace from Naomie Feller before Sakina Karchaoui and Vitoria Yaya completed the scoring. Danish club HB Køge recorded a 5-1 victory against Servette, while Inter Milan salvaged a 1-1 draw against Austria Vienna through a stoppage-time goal from captain Ivana Andrés after Modesta Uka scored Vienna's first goal in the tournament.
