German character actor and musician Ralf Richter died overnight leading into 15 September 2026 at the age of 69. His children, Aline and Maxwell Richter, announced his death in a joint statement published on social media on Tuesday. In remarks to Bild, Maxwell Richter stated that his father had recently suffered from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and heart insufficiency. The actor had received hospital treatment for these health issues several months prior to his death. Richter is survived by his son, his daughter, and six grandchildren.

Early life and entry into acting

Richter was born on 17 August 1957 in Essen and grew up in Bochum as one of eight children of architect Otto Richter. He was raised in an artistic family alongside his younger brother Frank-Martin Strauß, who became known as the musician FM Einheit. Before pursuing drama, Richter completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter. In 1977, he enrolled at the Westfälische Schauspielschule Bochum, an audition he later stated he attended purely by chance because he happened to be in the city. He studied there for two years without completing his formal graduation, but the period launched his stage and screen career.

Breakthrough with Das Boot and cinema career

Richter secured his breakthrough in 1981 when director Wolfgang Petersen cast the 24-year-old as Zentralmaat Frenssen in the submarine anti-war feature Das Boot. The film gained international acclaim and made Richter widely recognized across German cinema. Over the following two decades, he built an extensive filmography that included Carl Schenkel's 1984 elevator thriller Abwärts, Dominik Graf's 1988 crime film Die Katze, and the 1991 comedies Superstau and Manta - Der Film. His subsequent film appearances included Peter Thorwarth's 2002 construction comedy Was nicht passt, wird passend gemacht and the 2006 gangster feature Goldene Zeiten, as well as roles in Nicht mein Tag and Radio Heimat.
