Protein powder prices climb up to 60% as weight-loss injection demand strains whey supply

Prices for whey protein powder have risen 40 to 60 percent since January, pushed by booming demand from dieters using weight-loss injections and a structural tightening in the global whey market, according to German agriculture market analysts.

The retail market for protein-rich products has expanded sharply in recent years, but consumers are now facing steep price increases and intermittent shortages. According to market researcher YouGov, 4.6 million households in Germany bought protein powder at least once in the most recent period, a jump of 66 percent within a single year. The trend is driven primarily by consumers born between 1982 and 2011.

Demand surge and the weight-loss injection effect

Kerstin Keunecke, head of dairy industry at Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI), said the strong demand and changing dietary habits have pushed up prices since January. Protein-rich products are sought after by athletes as well as by people following high-protein, calorie-controlled diets. Demand has risen particularly in the United States, partly as a consequence of medications like the weight-loss injection.

It leads to a reduced feeling of hunger and thus helps to reduce weight.

Patients are advised to follow a high-protein diet to counteract muscle loss during weight reduction.

Whey supply cannot keep up

On the supply side, whey – a by-product of cheese production – cannot be expanded at will. A spokesperson for The Quality Group, the company behind the brands More Nutrition and ESN, said that processors are competing for the same raw material. Higher-value protein concentrates such as WPC and WPI are especially scarce.

We currently see not a pure short-term price spike, but a market correction in a structurally tighter whey protein market.

Industry response: investment and cost pressures

Dairy giant DMK has already expanded its production capacity and is investing around 26 million euros in a new facility for whey protein production in Edewecht, Lower Saxony. However, the company offered little hope of falling prices. A DMK spokeswoman said that the company and farmers are experiencing rising costs in many areas and that it is necessary to invest in technology and know-how.

Companies must bear all this to remain fit for the future.

Retail availability and wider protein squeeze

At the retail level, a Rewe spokesman said that some protein-powder brands are currently experiencing periods of limited availability, while the drugstore chain dm reported that there could be “isolated temporary supply bottlenecks” for particularly high-demand items. The protein hype is also hitting other high-protein foods: Skyr and tofu have suffered repeated shortages in recent months and were at times only available to a limited extent.
