Venice premiere and the Hansen controversy

Director Lance Oppenheim presented his narrative feature debut, Primetime, at the Venice Film Festival on 5 September 2026, where the film is screening in competition for the Golden Lion award. The psychological thriller stars Robert Pattinson as television presenter Chris Hansen, exploring the intersection between investigative journalism and televised entertainment on Dateline NBC. Hansen, who hosted the hidden-camera series To Catch a Predator from 2004 to 2007, did not participate in the production and has publicly described the movie as disingenuous, exploitative, and totally made up. Hansen had received an invitation to screen the film prior to the Venice premiere, but declined after taking issue with a required non-disclosure agreement. At the festival press conference on Saturday, Pattinson addressed the former host's criticisms.

“I would hope in some ways, like the amount of inspiration that his character has given so many people who are involved in this film for years now, I hope it's some kind of compliment.”

Portrayal of television sting operations

The film examines how the investigative programme merged criminal stings with high-stakes television production. To Catch a Predator deployed adult decoys pretending to be minors in internet chat rooms alongside law enforcement personnel to confront suspected sex predators on camera. First-time screenwriter Ajon Singh adapted the script from Luke Dittrich's Esquire article, titled "Tonight on Dateline This Man Will Die". The narrative focuses on the darkest period of Hansen's tenure, culminating in a 2006 sting operation in Texas where assistant district attorney Bill Conradt died by suicide as police officers and television cameras descended on his home. NBC faced a wrongful death lawsuit over the incident and cancelled the series in 2007.

Legal scrutiny and production origins

Hansen, aged 66, has raised ethical objections to the depiction of his colleagues and family members in what he characterised as fiction. During a 26 August 2026 appearance on Dan Abrams' SiriusXM podcast, Hansen stated that legal advisors were evaluating the film, while he also purchased pre-show advertising for his independent streaming platform. Having seen only the promotional trailer, Hansen remarked that Pattinson achieved a recognizable imitation, though he regarded the performance as overly dramatic and noted that he had long imagined Denis Leary playing the part. Oppenheim noted that he first encountered the original broadcast through parodies on South Park, becoming fascinated by how Hansen cultivated a persona with memorable catchphrases such as "have a seat right there."

Ensemble cast and distribution

Pattinson, who joined the project as a producer before signing on to star, worked closely with Oppenheim over several years to develop the character's vocal cadence and physical mannerisms. Distributor A24 has scheduled Primetime for theatrical release on 25 September 2026. The ensemble cast features Merritt Wever, Skyler Gisondo, Bokeem Woodbine, and singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers, who makes her feature film acting debut. Pattinson commended Bridgers for her composure and improvisational skill on set. The release forms part of a busy calendar for Pattinson in 2026, alongside his appearances in The Drama, The Odyssey, and the upcoming Dune: Part Three.
