Three dead in prairie fire that destroyed home in Deux-Sèvres, France

The fire

A prairie fire broke out near the village of Lhoumois in the Deux-Sèvres department on Tuesday 11 August 2026, around 16:00. The gendarmerie was alerted around 16:10 to several fire starting points in a neighbouring field, and the first firefighters arrived at 16:16, according to Nina Blanchon, substitute prosecutor of Niort. Fanned by strong wind, the flames quickly spread across approximately 20 hectares of hedges and meadows before reaching a fodder shed and a house at the lieu-dit La Piochellerie, near the floral park known as Jardins du Gué. The Deux-Sèvres department was already under an orange heatwave alert and elevated wildfire risk. The fire started near a road connecting Lhoumois to a nearby village, according to Mayor Jean Pillot.

The victims

Three bodies, entirely charred and not immediately identifiable, were discovered in the rubble of the house. Two were found on Tuesday evening and a third on Wednesday morning. Based on initial witness testimony, authorities believe the victims are a couple in their forties and their adult son, around 20 years old, who had rented the house for about three years. The property belongs to the owners of the Jardins du Gué tourist site, whom the mayor described as deeply affected. Pillot described the family as discreet, saying he had met them only twice in three years. A local resident who has lived in Lhoumois for 60 years said he had never seen them.

Pillot suggested the victims may not have seen the flames approaching, possibly because they had closed the shutters due to the heat. The commune, which sources describe as having between 150 and 260 inhabitants, is located about 50 kilometres west of Poitiers.

Investigation

A judicial investigation for involuntary homicide was opened on Tuesday by the Niort prosecutor's office. The case was assigned to the Parthenay research brigade, with 26 gendarmes mobilised to determine the origin of the fire and the circumstances of the deaths. Specialists from the Criminal Research Institute of the National Gendarmerie (IRCGN), based in Pontoise near Paris, were dispatched to the scene on Wednesday at midday. The PSIG (Surveillance and Intervention Platoon of the Gendarmerie) was also present to secure the perimeter. Autopsies are scheduled for Thursday 13 August to formally identify the victims.

Suspicion of arson

The detection of multiple fire starting points has raised suspicion that the blaze may have been deliberately set, though authorities have not confirmed this hypothesis. A wide security perimeter was established around the affected area, and access to the Jardins du Gué remained blocked. The fire mobilised 55 firefighters throughout the intervention, some coming as reinforcements from the neighbouring Vienne department. Eleven firefighters remained on site for monitoring on Wednesday morning. France, like much of Europe, is experiencing heatwaves and drought conditions that increase wildfire risk.
