Regional authorities anticipate that the race and surrounding week-long events will attract hundreds of thousands of visitors. Regional tourism officials project an economic impact of approximately 150 million euros, benefiting local hotels, restaurants, transport providers, retail shops, and regional service suppliers.

In 2027 we will have conditions to significantly raise that impact, with hundreds of thousands of people throughout the various days of the event, an extraordinary global audience, and an estimated economic potential of around 150 million euros, with effects on hospitality, dining, transport, commerce, services, and a wide chain of companies and suppliers in the region.

Broader 2027 calendar structure

The 2027 Formula 1 championship consists of 24 scheduled rounds. The season opens with the Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sakhir circuit from 12 to 14 March 2027, provided Middle East regional conditions permit, and concludes at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from 10 to 12 December 2027. Alongside Portugal, the 2027 schedule includes the return of Turkey to the calendar between 1 and 3 October 2027. Portuguese organizers intend to run cultural and automotive activities throughout the week leading into the Portimao race to encourage visitors to extend their stay in the Algarve beyond the three track days.

The 2027 and 2028 events will be the 19th and 20th editions of the Portuguese Grand Prix. Portugal held early championship races on the Boavista street track in Porto in 1958 and 1960, at Monsanto in Lisbon in 1959, and at the Autodromo do Estoril near Cascais between 1984 and 1996. Portimao first joined the Formula 1 schedule during the pandemic calendar reorganizations in October 2020, with spectator capacity restricted to 27,500 people, and hosted a second race behind closed doors without spectators in 2021. Lewis Hamilton won both previous races at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve driving for Mercedes, securing his 92nd career race victory at the venue in 2020 and establishing the track lap records of 1:16.652 in qualifying and 1:18.750 in race trim.
