FC Porto Secures Young Goalkeeper João Afonso from Santa Clara as First Summer Signing
The 19-year-old goalkeeper joins the reigning Portuguese champions on a five-year deal, with a fixed fee of €1.5 million and a €30 million release clause.
Transfer Agreement
On Monday, FC Porto announced the signing of 19-year-old goalkeeper João Afonso from CD Santa Clara. The deal, the first for the 2026/27 season, involves a permanent transfer of sporting rights and 80 percent of economic rights for a fixed fee of €1.5 million, plus up to €500,000 in performance-related variables. The contract runs until June 30, 2031, and includes a release clause set at €30 million. Additionally, Porto retains an option to purchase the remaining 20 percent of his economic rights for €2 million. Santa Clara will assume the solidarity mechanism, and Porto declared no intermediation fees were incurred.
Immediate Plans
Initially, Afonso will feature for Porto's B team while training regularly with the senior squad under manager Francesco Farioli. This arrangement was outlined in the club's official statement, which emphasized that the young international will remain in close contact with the first team. He is also set to participate in the pre‑season with the main squad. The move was framed as both an immediate step in his development and a long-term investment.
Player's Reaction
Afonso expressed his admiration for the club's established goalkeepers, singling out Diogo Costa as his idol. He noted that fellow keeper João Costa had already congratulated him, and he looks forward to working alongside the trio.I am hugely proud. My last game for Santa Clara was at the Estádio do Dragão, and I felt the atmosphere created by the fans. I thought, 'I wish I could play here too.' It's very different—FC Porto is a club of a much bigger dimension, and it's an honor to represent it.
Financial and Contractual Terms
The acquisition makes Afonso a secured long-term asset. Porto controls 80 percent of the economic rights immediately, with an option to buy the rest. His €30 million clause underscores the club's valuation of the prospect. The deal also outmaneuvered rivals Sporting, who had previously been linked with the young shot-stopper.
Season Ahead
With a five-season contract in place, João Afonso will aim to transition from the B team to senior contention, mirroring the pathway of many Porto academy graduates.
