Kickoff and stakes
FC Porto host PSV Eindhoven at the Estádio do Dragão on 20 October at 20:00, in matchday three of the Champions League league phase, with Sport TV5 broadcasting the match. Both sides are still seeking a first win in the competition. Porto have no points after defeats to Manchester City (0-2) and Betis (3-2), and three points would keep alive their hopes of a top-eight finish, which would secure direct qualification. PSV coach Peter Bosz expects an attacking Porto side and said he believes his team can impose its own style at the Dragão. Asked about Porto's longer rest, Bosz played down the gap, calling it a fact that is part of the game.
PSV's selection and tactics
Bosz said PSV must adapt its approach to each opponent and find the spaces where it can cause problems. He also pointed to a need for more consistency, recalling the match against Leipzig, where PSV dominated but lost the initiative once it could no longer sustain the pressure. On Van Bommel, Bosz said the player trained the day before but is not yet physically fit enough, and that using him would be a risk. Left-back Kostic expects a high-intensity game in which small details could decide the winner, and he says PSV will need courage and intelligence. Kostic put it bluntly:
“It is going to be tough for us and for them.”
Farioli and the Ajax years
Francesco Farioli, Porto's coach, previously led Ajax, where in 2024/25 the side held a nine-point lead over PSV with five matchdays left before PSV took the title. Farioli won both league meetings against Bosz that season, including a 2-0 win on 30 March 2025 in the 27th Eredivisie matchday. Bosz praised his counterpart before the match and said Farioli has earned respect:
“He was champion, has many victories and deserves praise, but I do not know whether he would like to swap places, and I am happy at PSV.”
Farioli later won the Portuguese title with Porto last season. Speaking at his own press conference, he warned that his side faces a stern test:
“We know we have a mountain to climb, because we are going to face a team that is three-time champion in the Netherlands.”
Squad news and recent record
Defender Bednarek is back in Farioli's options, a point the coach called important, after serving two matches of a suspension for a red card against Nottingham Forest in 2025/26. Porto have conceded in six successive games, and Farioli admitted they have suffered more than usual in recent matches. Porto have won seven of their eight home games against Dutch sides. Farioli also noted that PSV scored more than 100 goals in each of the last three league seasons and won the 2025/26 title by 20 points. Porto's head-to-head record is thin: they lost 5-0 in the first leg at Eindhoven in the 1988/89 second round, and took four points from PSV in the 1992/93 group stage without advancing.
Luuk de Jong's visit
Former forward Luuk de Jong, who wore the shirts of both FC Porto and PSV, travelled with the PSV squad to Portugal on Monday, 19 October. He is a surprise addition to the travelling party. He will be a special spectator at the Estádio do Dragão on the evening of 20 October. PSV recorded the moment, and FC Porto joined in, sharing it on social media as a gesture of fair play.
