Five-year-old boy dies in Monterotondo pool near Rome during summer camp

The incident

A five-year-old boy died on Wednesday morning, 22 July 2026, at the municipal swimming pool in Monterotondo, a town on the northeastern outskirts of Rome. The child was taking part in a summer camp and was in the water with approximately 15 other children when he suddenly felt unwell. According to initial reconstructions cited by Il Messaggero, the boy suffered a medical emergency and then slipped beneath the surface, drowning in front of the other children present. Rescue efforts

Staff at the facility immediately began resuscitation attempts. The regional emergency service Ares 118 dispatched two ambulances and a medical car to the scene. Given the severity of the situation, a helicopter ambulance was also activated. It took off and landed a short distance from the pool. However, by the time the air ambulance arrived, the child had already died. The medical personnel on board could only confirm the death. All attempts at cardiopulmonary resuscitation proved futile.

## Investigation Carabinieri from the Monterotondo mobile radio unit and operational section arrived promptly after the alarm was raised. They are now investigating the exact cause and dynamics of the incident, under the coordination of the public prosecutor's office in Tivoli. The prosecutor on duty was expected at the scene. Authorities have not yet released any findings, and the precise medical cause of the boy's collapse remains under investigation.
