Poland hosts Romania in Nations League as Jan Urban seeks tactical reset
Poland will play Romania at PGE Narodowy on Friday evening in the third round of UEFA Nations League Division B, aiming to rebound after taking one point from two matches.
Pressure mounts on Urban
The Polish national football team will host Romania on Friday, 2 October 2026, at PGE Narodowy in Warsaw for the third matchday of UEFA Nations League Division B. Kickoff is scheduled for 20:45 local time, with live television broadcasts on TVP 1 and TVP Sport, alongside digital streaming on sport.tvp.pl, the TVP Sport application, and Pilot WP. Poland enters the encounter following a difficult start to the campaign, having collected a single point across their opening two fixtures. The team opened the competition with a 0-0 home draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina before suffering a 3-1 away loss to Sweden in Solna. The disappointing sequence has increased scrutiny on manager Jan Urban, whose position has faced growing criticism ahead of the upcoming fixtures.
Tactical adjustments and projected lineup
Following the loss in Solna, where Urban deployed a three-man central defense that failed to contain Sweden in the second half, the coaching staff plans to revert to a four-man defensive line. Reports indicate that Poland will also alter its offensive setup by pairing Karol Świderski with Robert Lewandowski in attack. According to projected lineups published by portal Meczyki, the starting eleven will feature Marcin Bułka in goal, supported by defenders Matty Cash, Jan Bednarek, Jakub Kiwior, and Przemysław Frankowski. The midfield unit is expected to consist of Sebastian Szymański, Bartosz Nowak, Piotr Zieliński, and Nicola Zalewski, aiming to provide balance and create scoring opportunities after a two-game goal drought for the starting forwards.

Lewandowski ready to return
A central focus ahead of Friday's match is the physical condition and involvement of team captain Robert Lewandowski. The Chicago Fire forward started the opening match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he was substituted in the 87th minute, before playing only the final two minutes from the bench in Sweden. Speaking at the official pre-match press conference, Urban addressed questions regarding the veteran striker's readiness following travel and adaptation.
Regarding Robert, as I said, day by day off the pitch he looked better and better. Better rested and adapted to the new time zone. In training it is the same, you can see the desire to play and be on the pitch.
Romania loses Munteanu to injury
Romania enters the contest in a similarly difficult position after starting the group with consecutive losses against Sweden and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The visiting side, managed by Gheorghe Hagi, suffered a significant roster setback during their final preparations on Wednesday evening. Striker Louis Munteanu sustained an ankle sprain during training, prompting the Romanian Football Federation to confirm his exclusion from the squad on Thursday morning.
The 24-year-old DC United forward had been projected by Romanian outlet gsp.ro to start in Warsaw, but will now miss both Friday's fixture in Poland and Romania's subsequent home match against Sweden on 5 October. Hagi is expected to turn to Daniel Birligea of Italian club Frosinone Calcio as his starting replacement in attack. Following the match in Warsaw, Poland will conclude the international window with an away fixture against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday, 5 October.
