Poland opens Nations League campaign with 0-0 draw against Bosnia in Warsaw

Scoreless opening at PGE Narodowy

Poland began their UEFA Nations League Group B4 campaign with a 0-0 draw against Bosnia and Herzegovina at PGE Narodowy in Warsaw on Friday. The match marked Poland's first appearance in Division B after suffering relegation from League A in the previous edition under former manager Michał Probierz. Jan Urban's side struggled to generate clear scoring chances during a quiet first half, with an effort from Stade Rennes midfielder Sebastian Szymański directed straight at Bosnian goalkeeper Martin Zlomislić. Bosnia, led by head coach Sergej Barbarez, maintained defensive discipline throughout the encounter following their appearance at the World Cup in North America earlier in the year. The visiting goalkeeper kept Poland off the scoresheet in the second half by making several interventions against late attacking pressure.

Defensive stability and missed chances

Despite failing to secure three points at home, the Polish squad pointed to a clean sheet as a positive foundation. Defender Matty Cash expressed frustration with the final result while acknowledging the team's defensive work at PGE Narodowy.

Of course we are disappointed that we failed to win this match. At home we want to take advantage of our own pitch and we really should win such matches. Therefore, some dissatisfaction remains. On the other hand, if we look at the positives, we kept a clean sheet, so Marcin in goal can be satisfied with that.

Tymoteusz Puchacz echoed similar sentiments regarding the team's defensive solidity while pointing to missed opportunities in the final minutes. Puchacz noted that sharper finishing from Szymański and Piotr Zieliński would have changed the post-match mood completely.

Today we played with zero at the back, which is definitely a plus. I think it looked good in defence. Now we need to add goals. There were several situations, especially in the closing stages.

Youth integration and tactical changes

Urban introduced new talent into the senior setup during the match, handing a competitive debut to 18-year-old Mainz defender Kacper Potulski. Potulski earned his third cap overall after previously featuring in international friendlies against Ukraine and Nigeria. In the second half, Slavia Prague midfielder Wiktor Nowak made his senior international debut and came close to breaking the deadlock with a long-range effort that narrowly missed the top corner. Nowak reflected on his first senior minutes after the final whistle.

Group B4 standings and upcoming fixtures

The scoreless draw leaves Poland and Bosnia tied on one point each in Group B4. Sweden assumed early leadership of the group following a 2-1 home victory over Romania in the other Friday fixture. Group finishing positions carry significant consequences for European football seeding, as a top-two finish secures a spot in Pot 2 for the UEFA Euro 2028 qualifying draw, while finishing third or fourth relegates a team to Pot 3. Poland now prepares for a demanding travel schedule over the coming week, facing Sweden on Monday, 28 September at 20:45, before hosting Romania on 2 October and travelling to Bosnia on 5 October.

Midfielder Piotr Zieliński addressed the challenge of facing Sweden after Poland's previous defeat in the World Cup qualifying playoffs.

We will certainly want to go there and win that match. I will not say that we want revenge. We know that we suffered a bit because we did not go to the World Cup. Someone might have that in the back of their mind, but for us it is another match. You have to go there with confidence and faith that you can win it.
