
Dustin Poirier arrested after threatening police at Atlanta airport, says alcohol is not the answer
Former UFC interim champion Dustin Poirier was arrested for public drunkenness at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Sunday after being removed from a flight. He later posted on Instagram that he needs help coping with retirement and alcohol.
The arrest
Body camera footage released by police shows an agitated Dustin Poirier at an airport gate on Sunday 21 June. The 37-year-old former UFC fighter had been removed from a flight bound for Florida. When an officer approached, Poirier said,
, along with several expletives. The officer drew a Taser and called for backup before another officer handcuffed Poirier. He was taken to a police station and released on bail a few hours later.I'll fight you right now
The video and aftermath
Footage of the arrest, obtained by TMZ, circulated widely on social media. Poirier appeared in court on Monday 22 June. In Georgia, public drunkenness is a misdemeanor carrying up to one year in jail, a fine of up to $1,000, or both. No judicial decision has been announced yet.
Poirier's statement
On Tuesday 23 June, Poirier posted a longer message on Instagram acknowledging his struggle.
Earlier, he had written a shorter note: "I love you all. I'm working on myself."I'm at the point where I need some help, walking away from fighting hasn't been easy on me and alcohol isn't the answer. It has ruined my father's life and I will not allow it to ruin mine, my family deserve me at 100%. I'm trying to do everything I can to get my mind right and take the right next steps.
Career and retirement
Poirier retired from mixed martial arts on 19 July 2025 after a 16-year career. He compiled a 22-9 record in the UFC, won an interim lightweight title, and earned victories over Conor McGregor, Max Holloway and Justin Gaethje. Away from the octagon, his charity work supported children in his home state of Louisiana. Since retiring, he has worked as an analyst on UFC broadcasts.
