Podemos offers Izquierda Unida unity deals in 10 regions, but IU rejects them
Podemos proposed separate electoral unity deals with Izquierda Unida (IU) in ten regions, leaving out Madrid and Barcelona, ahead of the 29 November general election. IU's federal coordinator Antonio Maíllo rejected the offer.
Ione Belarra, leader of Podemos, offered IU electoral unity deals in ten autonomous communities, excluding Madrid and Barcelona, where Podemos would compete with the Frente Amplio coalition. IU's federal coordinator, Antonio Maíllo, rejected the offer, saying IU will only negotiate within the Frente Amplio framework and will not accept piecemeal deals for the regional elections. In Andalusia, Podemos Andalucía separately proposed unitary candidacies in all eight provinces, but Maíllo had already ruled out negotiating outside Frente Amplio.
Ada Colau, the former mayor of Barcelona, said she had accepted the Frente Amplio candidacy but would step aside if the parties backing a unitary list agreed on a better-placed candidate. Belarra criticised her for not submitting to primaries, noting that Irene Montero was the only candidate to run for the Podemos-led primary process. Jaume Asens of Comuns said Montero should be part of Frente Amplio, while Emilio Delgado of Más Madrid, who heads the coalition's Madrid list, invited Podemos to join and did not rule out two left-wing lists in Madrid. According to Delgado, the deadline for submitting lists closes on Friday, 16 October.
