Mauricio Pochettino extends US men's national team contract through the 2030 World Cup

The new deal

Mauricio Pochettino has signed a new contract to remain head coach of the United States men's national team through the 2030 World Cup, US Soccer announced on Monday. The 54-year-old Argentine took over the side in September 2024 after leaving Chelsea earlier that year, and his previous deal ran through the 2026 tournament. His long-time assistants Jesus Perez, Miguel D'Agostino and Toni Jimenez, along with more recent additions Sebastian Pochettino and Silvia Tuya, will remain on his staff.

Mauricio and his staff believe in the future of soccer in the United States and our new project allows us to build on progress of the USMNT and the momentum of US Soccer.

Expanded role

Beyond coaching the senior side, Pochettino and his staff will take on a broader role within the American soccer ecosystem. Their responsibilities will include advising and supporting youth national team development, coach education, and collaboration with professional leagues. US Soccer CEO and secretary general JT Batson framed the extension as part of a wider ambition.

2026 World Cup campaign

The extension follows a historic run at the 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Pochettino's side topped their group ahead of Australia, Paraguay and Turkiye, collecting six points, the highest-ever total for the US men's team at a World Cup. They then defeated Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32, marking the program's first knockout-stage victory since 2002. The run ended with a 4-1 loss to Belgium in the round of 16.

Record under Pochettino

Since taking charge, Pochettino has overseen 30 matches, recording 17 wins, two draws and 11 defeats. At the 2026 World Cup, he set a new US men's record with three victories in a single tournament. The team scored in all five of its matches and netted at least two goals in four of those games. The US won its group for only the third time in World Cup history and secured progression to the knockout stage with a match to spare.

What comes next

The 2030 World Cup will be hosted by Portugal, Spain and Morocco. Pochettino acknowledged the length of the commitment while noting the volatility of international football. Hedge fund manager Ken Griffin is again the lead philanthropic backer supporting the coach's contract. According to US Soccer's tax filing, Pochettino earned roughly five million euros in his first seven months on the job.
