Firefighters contain massive blaze at 8,000 sq m warehouse in Płock; no injuries reported

The outbreak

A fire broke out on the evening of 1 June at a service and storage hall on Rembielińskiego Street in Płock. The building, measuring roughly 80 by 100 metres, was quickly engulfed. The blaze produced a dense, dark plume of smoke visible across the city and from several kilometres away. Burning fragments of roof cladding were carried by the wind to distant parts of Płock.

The firefighting operation

At its peak, around 40 fire service units (approximately 120 firefighters) were deployed, including reinforcements from neighbouring counties and company units from local plants such as Orlen and PERN. By Tuesday morning the situation was declared under control, though damping-down operations continued with a reduced force of 10 to 15 units. The fire was initially reported to cover the entire hall; later in the evening it was confined to about one quarter of the structure.

The fire is currently on one quarter of the hall, and initially it covered the entire building.

Evacuations and safety measures

Six people evacuated from the hall itself, and residents of a nearby four-storey apartment block were also evacuated as a precaution when flames reached a line of trees alongside the building. All evacuees later returned to their homes. No injuries were reported and no one required medical assistance. Rembielińskiego and Przemysłowa streets were closed to traffic. The city's Crisis Management Department sent SMS alerts advising residents of the Wielka Płyta and Śródmieście estates to keep windows shut, and air quality was monitored due to heavy smoke.

What was inside

Part of the hall housed a printing works where rolls of paper were stored. Other sections contained a second-hand clothing shop, a furniture store, a tattoo studio, a nail salon, and a small children's gym. A restaurant attached to the service section was evacuated when the fire was first noticed.

Next steps

Firefighters remained on site through Tuesday morning to complete damping-down. A detailed inspection and investigation into the cause of the fire will begin once the operation is fully concluded. Hot weather was noted as an additional difficulty during the overnight effort.
