Pirlo emerges as the chosen one

With Guardiola out, Maldini and Leonardo quickly turned to Andrea Pirlo, the 2006 World Cup winner and former Juventus, Sampdoria, and United FC Dubai coach. Pirlo was not initially among the frontrunners, but his profile as a modern, possession-oriented coach aligned with the federation's vision. Reports indicate an agreement in principle has been reached for a four-year contract, with Pirlo set to earn €1.5 million per season plus bonuses. The move marks a surprising turn, as Roberto Mancini had been the favourite for weeks before being overtaken.

Contract and next steps

Before signing, Pirlo must resolve his existing contract with United FC of Dubai. The FIGC Federal Council is scheduled to meet on Tuesday 28 July at 12:00, where the appointment could be formalised. The federation has not yet confirmed any official announcement, but the deal is described as advanced and only final details remain.

Bookmakers reacted swiftly to the news. On Sisal, Pirlo is now the clear favourite at 1.72, having leapfrogged Antonio Conte (4.00) and Roberto Mancini (6.00).
