A brush fire broke out in low vegetation between the areas of Imeros Pefkos and Etos Steko in Pikermi, Attica, at approximately 15:30 on Tuesday, 11 August 2026. Firefighters arriving at the scene discovered a fully charred body inside a vehicle that appeared to have caught fire, with the remains leaning toward the passenger seat. The vehicle was stopped at the edge of the road. The fire spread rapidly through the low vegetation, prompting a large mobilisation of firefighting forces. Residents reported the blaze advanced with great speed, though no homes were reported threatened at the time. The body was found around 15:30 as firefighting units were battling the blaze in low vegetation.
Authorities rule out suicide
Police, a forensic medical examiner, and additional firefighters rushed to the scene after the fire was extinguished. Authorities initially examined the possibility of suicide, searching the vehicle for a weapon, knife, or gasoline canister, but found nothing inside the car. Based on this, investigators concluded the death was most likely caused by a pathological condition. According to this scenario, the driver suffered a medical episode while driving, lost control of the vehicle, which veered off course and crashed into trees, and the car subsequently caught fire. An eyewitness told authorities the car was moving erratically, as if the driver had lost control, before ending up in a field where it was engulfed in flames. The possibility of suicide was ruled out as investigations revealed no such signs in the vehicle.

Firefighting response
The fire was contained within 30 minutes of breaking out. According to two articles, the firefighting operation involved 121 firefighters with 2 foot-patrol teams from the 1st EMODE, volunteers, and 36 vehicles, including 23 Romanian firefighters with 5 vehicles and 18 French firefighters with 3 vehicles, deployed in Greece under a European firefighter pre-deployment program. A separate article reported 115 firefighters and 30 vehicles. Aerial support included 2 aircraft and 2 helicopters conducting periodic water drops. The Municipality of Spata assisted with water tankers. Emergency alert and fire risk
At 15:42, a 112 emergency alert was issued to residents in the wider area, instructing them to remain on standby. The fire risk for Attica on 11 August was classified as category 4, described as very high, according to the General Secretariat of Civil Protection under the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection. The same high-risk category applied to the Peloponnese region (Corinthia, Argolida, Laconia), Central Greece (Viotia, Fthiotida, Evia including Skyros), the North Aegean (Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria), and the South Aegean (Cyclades).
Ongoing investigation
The area remains cordoned off as the investigation continues. Authorities are working to identify the victim through the vehicle's license plate information. An autopsy and necropsy are expected to provide more definitive conclusions about the exact cause of death. The preliminary findings, reported by ERT, indicate the death was attributable to pathological causes and that the medical episode preceded the fire. The body remained at the scene until the forensic medical examiner completed the necessary procedures.
