Piast Gliwice earn 1-1 draw against Legia Warszawa after medical stoppage
Leandro Sanca scored a 95th-minute deflected equalizer in Gliwice following a match interruption caused by a medical emergency in the stadium stands.
Match opening at Okrzei
Legia Warszawa entered the fifth round of the Ekstraklasa campaign leading the standings with 10 points from four fixtures, having defeated Radomiak Radom 5:0 in their previous match. Piast Gliwice occupied 16th place with three points, having conceded 12 goals in four matches following consecutive defeats to Lech Poznań (0:3) and Wieczysta Kraków (3:4). The visitors tested the host defense immediately using long throw-ins delivered by Rafał Augustyniak into the penalty area. In the opening minute, Piast goalkeeper Domen Gril misjudged an initial delivery, requiring his defenders to clear the ball off the goal line. After Gril denied an attempt by Rafał Adamski with his feet in the sixth minute, Augustyniak launched a second long throw-in into the penalty area. Łukasz Zjawiński met the delivery in the seventh minute with a header into the net while Gril remained caught off his line. Piast answered with an individual run and shot by Leandro Sanca, which Legia goalkeeper Otto Hindrich saved at the near post.
Second-half pressure and medical emergency
Legia maintained control into the second half, with Michal Sevcik creating space in the penalty box in the 51st minute before Gril parried his low attempt. Piast manager Daniel Myśliwiec executed a triple substitution near the one-hour mark to increase attacking tempo against the defensive system organized by Legia manager Marek Papszun. The home side generated sustained pressure around Legia's penalty area, including a blocked shot from Jason Lokilo, a deflected effort from Hugo Vallejo, and a curling delivery from Jakub Lewicki that struck near the junction of the post and crossbar. In the 70th minute, referee Frankowski paused the match when a Piast supporter suffered a medical collapse in the stand above the visiting substitutes' bench. Medical staff initiated CPR on site while the stadium went quiet. At 19:05, seven minutes after the initial stoppage at 18:58, the referee instructed both teams to return to the dressing rooms. Stadium announcers subsequently informed spectators that the fan was transported to the hospital, allowing play to restart at 20:05 from the 77th minute.
Stoppage-time equalizer in Gliwice
Piast continued pressing forward after the restart to dismantle Legia's defensive lines. In the 95th minute of play, winger Lima beat his marker on the flank and found Leandro Sanca positioned outside the penalty area. Sanca took a direct shot from distance that struck Augustyniak, deflecting the ball past Hindrich and into the net to make the score 1:1. Referee Frankowski sounded the final whistle to end a contest that lasted more than three hours from the initial kickoff at Okrzei Street. The result extended Piast's run without defeat against Legia in Gliwice, following four consecutive league victories in their previous head-to-head meetings. Legia concluded the evening on 11 points at the top of the Ekstraklasa table, while Piast reached four points from five fixtures.
