Netflix documentary reveals Matthew Perry spent $7 million on sobriety efforts
A three-part Netflix docuseries directed by Mary Robertson, set to premiere on 27 October, details the recovery efforts and life of late Friends actor Matthew Perry.
The three-part Netflix docuseries The One About Matthew Perry, directed by Mary Robertson, is scheduled to premiere on 27 October, nearly three years after the actor died at age 54 on 28 October 2023 from ketamine intoxication. The production features appearances from several relatives and friends, including his sister Mia Perry Bowick, who reflected on both the comedy and tragedy that shaped her brother's life.
In the trailer for the series, Bowick revealed that Perry spent $7 million during his long-term efforts to overcome addiction. The actor, who portrayed Chandler Bing on Friends, had previously discussed his history of alcohol and prescription medication dependency in his 2022 autobiography, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing.
That goes to show how seriously he took his illness.
In a statement shared with Variety, Bowick stated that she hopes the docuseries will allow viewers to appreciate her brother beyond his acting role and substance struggles.
Matthew had a beautiful heart and a generous spirit.
It is currently unconfirmed whether other Friends cast members participated in the documentary, but the project includes appearances by Perry's close friends David Pressman and Roger Castillo, as well as former NBC president Warren Littlefield.
