Katy Perry marks 42nd birthday on outdoor trip with Justin Trudeau

Katy Perry turned 42 on 25 October and spent the day away from a large party, with her partner Justin Trudeau, the former Canadian prime minister. She posted private photos on Instagram several days later. The pictures show the pair climbing sandstone cliffs on a via ferrata in helmets and safety harnesses, crossing a narrow bridge over a deep gorge, and paddling a kayak through canyons. The set ends with a piece of birthday cake, and one photo shows the couple kissing on a summit.

Perry did not name the location. The sports outlet 7sur7 noted that the rock formations resemble Glen Canyon on the Colorado River in the US state of Arizona, but no source confirmed the place.

What Perry wrote

In the caption, Perry said she had climbed to "level 42" that week and that she was at peace with turning 42 as long as she could do it with Trudeau by her side. She wrote that she had not been excited by the number at first, until she was told that 42 is the answer to everything. She was referring to Douglas Adams's novel The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, in which 42 is the answer to the question of life's meaning. The post was shared with her 195 million Instagram followers and included a red heart.

Fans picked up the reference quickly. Several commenters mentioned the book under her photos, while others sent birthday wishes. One wrote that it was an adventurous way to mark the 42nd, and another hoped to see what Perry had planned for her 52nd. The photos went up several days after the birthday itself.

The relationship

Perry and Trudeau made their relationship public over the past year. Tgcom reported that the pair were first seen together in Montreal in July 2025. Speaking to People, Perry said she had met Trudeau on tour and that things changed afterward, and she called him the love of her life. Tgcom added that Trudeau attends several of her concerts and knows her songs by heart.

Trudeau, now 54, announced in 2023 that he was separating from Sophie Gregoire after about 18 years of marriage, and the two have three children together. Perry was previously in a relationship with the British actor Orlando Bloom for nine years, and they share a daughter, Daisy.
