Resignation after the Sejm vote
Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz is leaving the government of Donald Tusk. The minister of funds and regional policy announced her decision on X on Thursday evening, 22 October, shortly after the Sejm voted on two-term limits for local governments. She named that vote as the direct reason for leaving. She also chairs Polska 2050, and her post set a sharp tone, framing the departure as a matter of principle rather than office.
“Values are more important to me than seats of power.”
In the same message she said that over almost three years in the post she had done the most she could alongside her colleagues.
Dispute over two-term limits
The trigger was the Sejm's vote on two-term limits for local governments. Pełczyńska-Nałęcz wrote that the change, which she said 75 percent of Poles want, went ahead despite votes from the coalition. She said a significant number of Polska 2050 deputies had sided with political arrangements rather than with the public. She described it as not the coalition's first such decision, though a fundamentally important one. The Sejm kept the change in place.
“The two-term limit for local governments has been upheld.”
Her record in government
She listed several achievements from her time in the ministry. In her account, developers lost subsidies, apartment prices were published openly, and prices stopped rising. She also said the government had tackled what she called an unfair tax system. Finally, she said the KPO funds had been invested at 100 percent. These are her own claims, made in the same message as her resignation.
Leadership of Polska 2050
She addressed her remarks to Szymon Hołownia, the party's founder, who had stepped away and returned to active politics. She wrote that she was leaving the party in his hands.
“I am leaving the party in the hands of its founder, who left but has come back.”
She added a wish that he remember the values he invoked when he sought power.
