PASOK submits amendment in Greece to lower fuel excise taxes during oil price spikes
Greece's opposition party PASOK submitted a parliamentary amendment proposing an automatic reduction in fuel excise taxes whenever global crude prices exceed official budget forecasts.
Proposed fuel tax mechanism
The entire parliamentary group of Greece's opposition party PASOK submitted an amendment to establish a permanent adjustment mechanism for the special consumption tax on gasoline and diesel. Under the proposal, the tax rate would decrease whenever the international price of crude oil exceeds the benchmark price used in the country's official fiscal budget planning.
The mechanism channels surplus value-added tax revenues generated by higher energy prices directly into temporary reductions in excise duty at the pump, preventing increased government revenue at consumer expense without adding a burden to the state budget.
Legislative debate
The amendment was submitted as part of a Ministry of Development bill scheduled for debate in Parliament on Thursday. PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis is scheduled to address lawmakers during the session to present the party's energy proposals.
According to the proposal, the activation threshold relies exclusively on Brent crude assumptions in the macroeconomic framework of the national budget, deliberately excluding refined product benchmark prices, such as Platts, and refining margins.
