What happened
A 21-year-old woman is in critical condition in the intensive care unit of the Tzaneio hospital in Piraeus, after she was found comatose at a house on Paros. An ambulance collected her just after midnight and took her to the island's health centre. Police were informed at around 00:30 that she had been moved there. Because of her condition she was airlifted to Tzaneio, where she is intubated, and doctors are making every effort to save her, according to the president of the POEDIN union.
The investigation
The woman was at the house with her 23-year-old friend and another couple. Police arrested the friend on Paros and he is being questioned. A vial containing a substance that has not yet been identified was found in his possession. According to Kathimerini, he reportedly told investigators during a preliminary examination that she had used the substance. A case file has been opened against him for violating drug legislation, while the second couple is also being questioned but no offences have emerged for them so far. A forensic examination has been ordered, and police are waiting for blood and laboratory results to establish what she may have consumed.
Conflicting accounts and the union statement
No authority has yet confirmed what the substance was or the circumstances in which she took it, and the reports differ. POEDIN president Michalis Giannakos said it is suspected she received so-called 'date rape pills', NewsIT described a stimulant that she reportedly took, and in.gr said investigators are examining whether she had used a narcotic. Iefimerida reported that authorities are examining whether substances were given to her without her knowledge. In a statement, Giannakos said:
“Today before dawn a 21-year-old girl was taken to Tzaneio Hospital from Paros in a comatose state from substances.”
He added that the friend was arrested on Paros and is being questioned, and he praised the efforts of the Tzaneio doctors to save her. The investigation is ongoing, and the test results are still pending.
