Cullerton is a corporate litigator known for high-stakes courtroom battles. He was part of the Wachtell team that represented OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman against Elon Musk's lawsuit in California, a victory that burnished his reputation. Wachtell Lipton is one of the most exclusive law firms in the world, and its equity partners typically earn tens of millions of dollars a year.

At the time of the video, Cullerton was poised to leave the firm. According to the Financial Times and sources cited by the New York Post, he was finalising a move to Gibson Dunn, a rival Manhattan powerhouse. The lateral transfer would have brought a significant pay package; Fanpage reported that the average partner salary at the destination firm touches $12 million. The job offer evaporated after the clip went viral, a cost some outlets put at "dozens of millions of dollars."

Immediate professional consequences

Wachtell Lipton moved swiftly after the footage spread. Cullerton was suspended and the firm opened an internal investigation whose details it has not disclosed, Il Fatto Quotidiano reported. It remains unclear whether Borenzweig is also under scrutiny. Cullerton is married to Moira Kim Penza, a prominent U.S. prosecutor, a detail that US tabloids amplified.

The viral exposure triggered wider fallout. Paparazzi staked out Cullerton's home, and photographers followed Borenzweig to a brunch with her parents at a downtown hotel. The pair's sudden visibility prompted a debate about ethics in the workplace: several outlets noted that internal policies at many US companies explicitly forbid relationships between senior partners and junior associates within the same department.
