Parents sent to prison after 3-month-old baby dies from suspected abuse in Sabadell
A couple has been sent to prison in Sabadell, Barcelona, after their 3-month-old baby died in hospital from injuries consistent with violent shaking, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
The events
On the night of 23 June, the parents called emergency services after the baby stopped breathing at the family home in Sabadell. Paramedics reanimated the infant at the scene and transferred him to Hospital Parc Taulí. The baby was admitted on Wednesday 24 June but died early Friday morning, 26 June, at 8 a.m.
Medical alert and police investigation
After carrying out tests, medical staff at the hospital observed symptoms compatible with the baby having been shaken violently. They immediately alerted the Mossos d'Esquadra, triggering child-protection protocols. Investigators from the Sabadell unit arrested both parents as suspected perpetrators of homicide, injuries and mistreatment. Authorities are also examining whether the infant had older injuries that would suggest previous episodes of abuse.
Judicial decision
On Sunday 28 June, the investigating judge at the Court of Instance Plaza 3 in Sabadell ordered both parents to be remanded in custody. The couple had moved to Catalonia from Zaragoza just two months ago. The investigation remains open as police continue to gather evidence.
