Panthers dominate divisional clash in Atlanta

The Carolina Panthers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 34-3 on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in front of 71,143 spectators. Bryce Young completed 23 of 36 passes for 287 yards and three touchdowns without a turnover, improving his career record against Atlanta to 5-1. Carolina took control before halftime when Young completed a 7-yard touchdown pass to Darren Waller with 20 seconds remaining in the second quarter, building a 20-3 lead. Waller added a second touchdown on a 12-yard catch early in the third quarter, and Carolina's defense limited Atlanta to 286 total yards. The victory marks Carolina's fourth consecutive win against the Falcons and balances the Panthers' record at 1-1 following their opening 59-37 defeat against Chicago.

Turnovers mount as Atlanta benches Rush

Atlanta dropped to 0-2 as the offense committed five turnovers and failed to reach the red zone for the second consecutive week. Starting quarterback Cooper Rush lost a fumble on a 9-yard scramble on the game's opening snap and threw an interception to linebacker Bobby Okereke on Atlanta's second possession. Rush completed 10 of 17 passes for 86 yards before head coach Kevin Stefanski benched him late in the third quarter with Atlanta trailing 27-3. Undrafted rookie Jack Strand entered the game, but linebacker Devin Lloyd intercepted Strand's first pass and returned it 16 yards for a touchdown. Strand finished 8 of 15 for 59 yards with an interception and a lost fumble on a botched snap.

I'm disappointed in our performance as a football team. That's all of us. It's not just one position. Disappointed, and I'm going to make sure that we look at answers and not pinpoint one position, if you will.

Frustrations extended to the sidelines as the home crowd booed the team throughout the afternoon. Wide receiver Drake London caught four passes for 51 yards and engaged in a verbal altercation with a spectator in the stands during the game.

Some personal stuff that was said. I am going to be honest here, I don't take lightly to disrespect at all. I don't care who you are. I am a man, too, at the end of the day. If you want to get on a personal level, I can get there, too. But that's not the right thing to do, right? I have to be the bigger man in some of those situations, but with how the game was going and what was said to me, I didn't like it.

Quarterback recoveries ahead of Thursday matchup

With Rush struggling, Atlanta faces a short turnaround before visiting the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night. Starting quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was cleared for full practice work on August 24 after tearing his left anterior cruciate ligament on November 16, 2025. Penix split practice repetitions last week and could make his season debut against Green Bay alongside Tua Tagovailoa, who missed the first two games with an oblique injury. Atlanta players noted they will not pressure Penix to return before he feels completely comfortable.

Carolina travels to face the Cleveland Browns next Sunday, while Atlanta seeks its first victory of the season in Green Bay.
