João Palhinha arrives in Lisbon ahead of €14m Benfica move from Bayern Munich
Portuguese international midfielder João Palhinha landed in Lisbon on Saturday as Benfica close in on a deal with Bayern Munich worth an initial €14 million.
Arrival at Humberto Delgado Airport
Portuguese international midfielder João Palhinha landed at Humberto Delgado Airport in Lisbon at 13:40 on Saturday, August 22. Accompanied by his father and his brother, the 31-year-old arrived on a flight from Munich while final negotiations between Bayern Munich and Benfica progressed toward completion. Approached by reporters in the arrivals terminal, Palhinha refused to discuss his impending transfer to the Lisbon club. He stated that his presence in the Portuguese capital was solely for family reasons during authorized leave granted by the German club. Palhinha reiterated that he remains under contract with Bayern Munich and scheduled his return to Germany for Sunday.
Before departing the terminal, Palhinha asked waiting reporters to respect his personal time.
I respect your work, but I am not going to speak, I am still a Bayern Munich player. I came to be with my children for three days. I am in Portugal to enjoy my time with my children. I had time off, I am still a Bayern player. It has been a month since I was with my children, please let me through.
Transfer fee and contract details
Benfica and Bayern Munich reached an agreement on a permanent transfer structured around a fixed fee of €14 million and €5 million in performance-related add-ons. The total valuation of the deal could reach €19 million, with Portuguese reports citing a fixed fee range between €14 million and €15 million. Palhinha is set to sign a four-year contract with Benfica once the remaining administrative details regarding his contract rescission with Bayern Munich are resolved. According to wage data from Capology, the contract will make the midfielder the highest-paid player in the Primeira Liga by a wide margin. The agreement concludes weeks of negotiations between the Portuguese club and the Bavarian side.

Reconnection with Marco Silva
The transfer brings Palhinha back to Portuguese football under manager Marco Silva, who previously coached the defensive midfielder for two seasons at Fulham. Silva identified Palhinha as his preferred choice to anchor Benfica's midfield in the defensive number six role. The strong personal and professional relationship developed during their time in London served as a primary factor in steering negotiations toward Benfica. The switch represents a notable cross-city development in Lisbon, as Palhinha developed in the academy of rivals Sporting CP and made his senior breakthrough with the green and white club before moving abroad in 2022.
Career path and Premier League interest
Palhinha spent the previous season on loan in the Premier League with Tottenham Hotspur, who chose not to trigger the purchase option included in their agreement with Bayern Munich. Sporting CP explored a potential reunion with the midfielder earlier in the summer transfer window, but Palhinha initially waited for developments in England, prompting Sporting to sign Sergi Altimira instead. English clubs Aston Villa and Newcastle United also pursued the midfielder in recent weeks, yet neither side reached an agreement on terms with Bayern Munich. Palhinha ends a four-year spell abroad across Fulham, Bayern Munich, and Tottenham, having also earned 37 caps for the Portuguese national team across two European Championships in 2020 and 2024 as well as the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
