Hull City beat Manchester United 2-0 at MKM Stadium on top-flight return
Hull City marked their top-flight return with a 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Saturday through first-half goals from Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy.
Set-piece goals deliver first-half lead
Hull City marked their return to the Premier League after a nine-year absence by defeating Manchester United 2-0 at the MKM Stadium on Saturday. Sergej Jakirovic's side took control in the first half through two well-worked set-piece routines. The opening goal arrived in the 17th minute when Regan Slater delivered a corner into the penalty area. Oli McBurnie flicked the ball toward goal, forcing United goalkeeper Senne Lammens to push his header onto the far post before Semi Ajayi converted the rebound from close range. Hull doubled their advantage seven minutes before halftime after United debutant Youri Tielemans fouled Mohamed Belloumi outside the penalty box. Slater curled the resulting free kick into the area, where record signing Nobel Mendy rose above the defence to head the ball beyond Lammens.
Ajayi reflected on the opening strike after the match.
I didn't really care if any one of us scored as long as we got the goal. I was lucky that there was no VAR check or nothing. So I was buzzing that it was ultimately my goal.

Defensive structure and goalkeeper saves
Jakirovic set Hull up in an organized low block that prevented United from generating clear scoring opportunities. Goalkeeper Konstantinos Tzolakis produced five saves during his debut to secure a clean sheet for the hosts. His interventions included an early stop on a Bryan Mbeumo strike, followed by a 78th-minute denial when Mbeumo found space in a central area inside the penalty box. In central defence, Republic of Ireland international John Egan featured in his first top-flight match since 2017 at the age of 33. Hull captain Lewie Coyle explained after the final whistle that the squad executed their planned tactical assignment throughout the match.
We know what we're doing when we're in that low block and we have to defend.
Manchester United struggle in midfield
The defeat marked the first time Manchester United have lost an opening-day Premier League match to a newly promoted side. Michael Carrick, who took over permanently in May after steering United to a third-place finish last season, gave starts to midfield signings Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. Both struggled to dictate play before Carrick replaced them in the second half. Marcus Rashford entered the match as a halftime substitute for his first appearance for the club since December 2024 following his return from a loan spell at Barcelona. United captain Bruno Fernandes and forward Patrick Dorgu failed to break down Hull's backline as the visitors generated few clear openings.
Carrick addressed the technical lapses that led to both conceded goals in his post-match press conference.
Two goals is frustrating anyway. They decide the game today and there's things to improve on.
Overcoming preseason predictions
The victory occurred 13 weeks after Hull secured promotion by beating Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final. Several pundits had projected the club for immediate relegation, with former England midfielder Joe Cole stating on a podcast that he would be surprised if the club remained in the division. Hull supporters responded by chanting Cole's name after Mendy's 38th-minute goal and again near the final whistle. Club owner Acun Ilicali noted prior to kickoff that the squad embraced being viewed as outsiders. The result places Hull level on three points with defending champions Arsenal, while Carrick's side turn their attention to a fixture against another promoted team, Ipswich.
