Four family members killed in Palencia motorway crash, girl, 9, critically injured
A single-vehicle rollover on the A-67 near Herrera de Pisuerga claimed the lives of two parents and two children on Sunday afternoon, leaving a 9-year-old girl with very serious injuries.
The accident
A car carrying a family of five left the A-67 motorway at kilometre 83, in the municipality of Herrera de Pisuerga (Palencia, Castilla y León), at around 16:20 on Sunday 5 July 2026. The vehicle veered off the road, rolled over several times, and came to rest with all occupants trapped inside. No other vehicles were involved. The family, from Valladolid, was reportedly returning from a trip to Cantabria.
Victims
Four people died at the scene: the parents, aged 38 and 45, and two of their children. Most sources give the children's ages as 17 and 14, though one report lists them as 15 and 26. A third child, a 9-year-old girl, survived but sustained injuries described as "very serious" by the Government Delegation in Castilla y León.
Emergency response
The 112 emergency centre alerted the Guardia Civil traffic unit, the provincial fire brigade, and the Sacyl health emergency service. A mobile ICU, a basic life-support ambulance, a medical team from the local health centre, and a medical helicopter were dispatched. Firefighters freed the trapped occupants. The injured girl was airlifted to the Complejo Asistencial de Burgos. The left lane of the A-67 in the decreasing direction was closed while emergency crews worked.
Investigation
The Guardia Civil is investigating the cause. The Government Subdelegation in Palencia, citing witness statements, said the leading hypothesis is driver drowsiness. The road remained partially closed for several hours, according to the Directorate-General for Traffic.
