Pakistan beats China 3-0 to claim Asian Games volleyball bronze as Heynen struggles
Pakistan secured its first Asian Games volleyball medal in 64 years by sweeping China 3-0 in Nagoya on Saturday, leaving Vital Heynen's squad without a podium finish.
Bronze medal loss in Nagoya
Pakistan defeated China in straight sets on Saturday to claim the bronze medal at the Asian Games volleyball tournament in Nagoya. The Pakistani team secured the victory with set scores of 25-18, 25-16, and 25-18, preventing China from reaching 20 points in any of the three frames. The victory delivered Pakistan its second volleyball medal in the history of the Asian Games and its first in 64 years, repeating the bronze finish achieved at the 1962 Games in Indonesia. Pakistan, representing a population of 250 million, entered the contest as an underdog against a Chinese team that had been regarded as the clear favorite to secure third place.
China's tournament run in Japan
China reached the third-place match after competing through the opening rounds of the Nagoya tournament. During the preliminary phase, the Chinese squad finished at the top of its group by securing victories against South Korea, Taiwan, and the Philippines. The team then advanced through the quarterfinal round by eliminating Thailand without dropping a set. China met tournament host Japan in the semifinals, where the Japanese side prevailed 3-2 after a five-set match. Following that narrow defeat, China was unable to regroup in Saturday's bronze medal match against Pakistan.
- China defeats South Korea, Taiwan, and the Philippines to win pool
- China eliminates Thailand to qualify for the medal round
- China loses 3-2 against Japan in a five-set match
- China loses 3-0 against Pakistan to finish fourth
Setbacks across the 2026 season
The loss in Nagoya concluded a difficult 2026 international campaign for China's men's volleyball program. In the preliminary phase of the Volleyball Nations League, China finished in last place after recording one victory and 10 defeats across 11 matches. The team also exited the Asian Championship at the quarterfinal stage, matching one of the lowest tournament placements in China's history. The series of losses resulted in a significant loss of points in the FIVB world rankings and caused China to miss qualification for the 2027 World Championship, marking the first time in 37 years since 1990 that the nation will not appear at the tournament.
A very sad end for Vital Heynen in the Chinese national team, because I cannot imagine both sides remaining interested in cooperation after such a season.
Heynen's tenure and Pakistani youth growth
The Chinese volleyball federation appointed Vital Heynen as head coach in the spring of 2024, targeting qualification for the Los Angeles Olympic Games. Heynen previously coached Poland's men's team from 2018 to 2021, winning a World Championship gold, two Nations League medals, two European Championship bronzes, and a World Cup silver medal, before spending one year leading the German women's national team. In contrast to China's struggles, Pakistan's senior medal follows steady investments in its youth volleyball structure. Pakistan's under-19 national team approached the World Championship quarterfinals one year ago, while its under-17 team came within one victory of reaching the World Championship semifinals earlier this year.
