Paderborn ends six-year top-flight victory drought

SC Paderborn secured their first Bundesliga victory in more than six years with a 3-1 home win over TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in the final fixture of matchday four. The result ended a three-game goal drought for the newly promoted club, who had failed to score in their opening three league fixtures. The triumph marked Paderborn's first three points in the German top flight since a 2-1 away victory against SC Freiburg on 25 January 2020. The win moved head coach Ralf Kettemann's side to four points from four matches, lifting them to 12th place in the standings ahead of the three-week international break.

First-half goals reward clinical transition play

Playing in front of 14,224 spectators, Paderborn opened with active transition play. Forward Stefano Marino generated the first clear opportunity in the 13th minute, but Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann parried his shot. Hoffenheim nearly took the lead in the 23rd minute when Vladimir Coufal struck the post with a long-range effort. Paderborn opened the scoring in the 29th minute after a cleared corner fell to Santiago Castaneda, whose deflected shot from inside the penalty area beat Baumann. The goal prompted the arena sound system to play the club goal anthem "Hermann Löns, die Heide brennt" for the first time this season. The hosts extended their lead in the 42nd minute when Marino converted a low cross from Laurin Curda inside the five-meter area.

Second-half pressure and decisive headers

Hoffenheim emerged with greater attacking intent after the interval in an effort to overcome the two-goal deficit. Paderborn goalkeeper Nahuel Noll denied Bambasé Conté with a sharp reaction save early in the second half. The visitors reduced the deficit in the 50th minute when Adam Daghim received a pass from Max Moerstedt and scored from open space inside the penalty box. Paderborn weathered Hoffenheim's pressure before restoring their two-goal margin in the 69th minute. Striker Steffen Tigges, who entered the match as a halftime substitute, met a cross to score with a header. Hoffenheim continued to attack late in the contest, with Conté striking the crossbar in the 83rd minute.

Hoffenheim struggle following European setback

The defeat was Hoffenheim's third loss in four league matches, leaving Christian Ilzer's team in 14th place. The setback occurred three days after a 0-2 away loss against OFI Crete during their Europa League opener. Hoffenheim head coach Ilzer had called on his team to produce a focused response following that European defeat.

Ilzer restored Conté to the starting lineup after Germany national team coach Jürgen Klopp selected the 23-year-old on Thursday for international duty.
