US-Iran talks to run overnight in Switzerland as Vance hails 'historic' meeting and 'great progress'
An American official says negotiations between Washington and Tehran will continue through the night, with Vice President J.D. Vance reporting 'great progress' in the first high-level meeting of its kind.
Talks extend through the night
A senior American diplomat confirmed that the talks between the US and Iran at the Bürgenstock resort in Switzerland will go on all night.
The discussions, which began earlier on 21 June, are the highest-level direct encounter between the two countries’ leadership, according to Vice President Vance. The Iranians remain here and talks continue. We expect to work all night.
Historic meeting and rapid progress
Vance, speaking at a press conference from the venue, described the gathering as a historic first.
He reported swift advances.Never before have Iranian and American leadership met at such a high level.
The delegation includes US envoy Steve Witkoff and senior advisor Jared Kushner, with Qatar and Pakistan acting as mediators. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of Pakistan was among the officials Vance greeted. We have already made great progress in just the last few hours.
Trump’s directive to turn a new page
Vance said President Trump instructed the team to fundamentally remake the relationship.
He added that the president wanted to extend a hand of friendship if Iran’s leadership abandoned nuclear weapons ambitions and ceased being a source of regional instability.President Trump asked us to turn the page and transform our relationship with the people of Iran.
If the leadership is willing to stop being a factor of regional instability, if it is willing to give up its long-term aspirations for nuclear weapons, then the United States is ready to fundamentally transform its relationship with this country.
Core issues and regional backdrop
The talks address the Strait of Hormuz, the nuclear deal, and mechanisms to ensure free passage through the vital waterway. Vance acknowledged that Iran remains a destabilising actor but emphasised a broader goal.
On Lebanon, he said the US had done more than any other government in recent months to stop the conflict, noting that peace requires compromises. Meanwhile, Article 2 reports that Trump has threatened new strikes if Hezbollah’s activities are not limited. The question is whether we can permanently change relations in the Middle East.
